Confused about the ending

I didn't quite understand what the ending was supposed to indicate. Were we supposed to guess which guy Miriam was going to choose? Or was there a moral being portrayed that who she chose didn't matter? Or was the focus more on John discovering the identity of the tightrope walkers, and once he did, nothing more needed to be said. I was just confused, and not sure what to make of things. Anybody have any answers?

I thought it meant that Miriam was allowed to love both, since they were all going home together. His grandfather forced John to go back with Miriam, so he wouldn't have any regrets. John wanted to spend time with his grandfather.

I thought the whole "out the window" thing meant that everyone was learning, however reluctantly, to laugh and get over themselves and get along, and only the grandfather could have brought that out in BOTH Pierre and John.

Strangly the tightrope walkers tied everything up, more than John expected. But he said earlier that he had a feeling everything would be clearer once he saw their faces.
This is all just my opinion, but it seemed like a happy ending to me.
