I agree with the other people that this was an elegant, subtle, sensitively crafted piece of film making. But for me it never really took off because it lacked a major level of believability. I simply could not believe that anyone would cheat on these two people. They were both gorgeous, loyal, thoughtful, attentive and with sweet dispositions. (Plus they were both cool dressers with great hairstyles.) Who in their right mind would ever turn their backs on them and cheat with someone else?! The whole premise of the film collapsed for me.

people cheat, no matter how gorgeous and nice their wives/husbands are.

THIS. At one point while watching this movie and marveling over how beautiful the woman was, I also asked myself, "Who would ever cheat on her?" But then I realized I'd been watching her for over an hour and never once saw her smile or do anything even remotely fun or lively. She just stood around moping and/or posing in her beautiful outfits.

I don't know, people cheat for a lot of different reasons, maybe it just happened, like Tony Leung's character says when he fell inlove with Maggie Cheung's character.

Looks have nothing to do with why people cheat. I've seen it time and time again where the cheats go off with physically ugly people who cannot compare one iota to their spouses physically.

They cheat because they are SELFISH. They cheat because they are IMMORAL. They don't care who they hurt, even their own children. It's all about them and their egos. Many think they will never be caught because in a way it IS true that "the spouse is the last to know." There is no excuse for cheating, ever.

If someone wants out of a marriage the kindest way is the most honest way, and there's no need to cheat for that to be the catalyst in a breakup. In the movie's situation perhaps the cheating spouses planned all along to go back to their original partners. They thought their spouses so loyal that they would never engage in the same disloyalty as the cheating couple.

I dont think its that simple. Ppl are not robots. They could fall inlove with someone else and have a hard time getting a divorce for various reasons. Or they just feel lonely in a broken marriage. Tbh we know nothing of their marriage prior the cheatings. Ofc cheating is an awful thing and it hurts a lot but sometimes it can hurt for both parties.

If they fall in love with someone else then they should admit that to their spouses BEFORE any sex has been engaged in. I know many cheated upon people and without one exception they say to me, "I just wish he/she had been more honest." Sometimes I think Billy Joel's song Honesty is the most profound song ever written. "Everyone is so untrue." Then of course Jesus said that if one even LOOKS at another person with lust they have committed adultery already in their minds. So God's standards are very rigid compared to our own.

I am with you. Not into that god and Jesus thing but I always believed honesty was the best thing to do all the time. Why would I give the other the impression that I'm with her if I'm not? People who cheat on other's principles are ugly. If I want to have a relationship without sacrifice I will get one without sacrifice.

You could be married to the hottest piece of ass and still cheat, a lot of men and women do it because it's immoral and they get a rush from it or they do it as a form of escapism, to get away from their ball and chain.
