Australia the first country to get this?? Why?

I'm from Australia and it puzzles me why we were the first country to get this movie. I remember seeing it in theatres in the middle of 1997 (winter time). I had a friend visiting from the USA, and me, him, and another friend all went to see it. I guess when he went back home he could have boasted about seeing the movie before anyone else in the country!
