If B&R had been made in 1998 not 1997

Would things been very different? In 1998 that romantic comedy phase through 93 to 97 had ended, 97 hard tons of films coming out that weren't taking themselves seriously. B&R was rushed into production two years ahead of schedule not three years, don't think it would've made it a better film but a slightly successful one and maybe a little more watchable.

If it had been made in 1998 and not 1997 would still have the same cast and crew?

reply

If Warner Bros. had given Joel free reign over what his vision of the movie should've been, then I'd have no doubt that Val Kilmer would've reprised his role if "Batman and Robin" turned out to be a lot like "Batman Forever". This would mean no Clooney.

The only other change I can think of is Batgirl/Barbara Wilson being played by an actual British actress. She is the niece of Alfred, right? And studied in England? Makes sense.

reply

Joel's vision was Year One while fans wanted a sequel, not sure why they wanted him when they wanted a sequel and a kid's film.

B&R feels like it needed more time casting not relying on stunt casting of actors just because they were popular.

The producer, Peter McGregor (the guy 'McGregor's Syndrome' was named after) suggested the British Olivia d'Abo for the part of Batgirl/Barbara Wilson. Personally, I would have preferred her. She's sexier IMHO, and has a British accent, but she wasn't as big a name as Alicia Silverstone. After all, post-Clueless Silverstone was flavour of the month (and it pretty much was that long).

reply

Best not to hire anyone too famous in the role of a superhero because it could be distracting especially if they are associated with something else or have a huge persona.

reply

Is that sarcasm?

Alicia Silverstone was famous at the time this movie came out because of Clueless. And you're worrying about the actress playing Batgirl being too famous in a film with George Clooney, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman in?

reply

There have been sequels that have came out two years after the last film that have turned out alright so why is B&R so different? well B&R started principal photography started on September 1996 and wrapped up on January 1997, if they wanted a 97 release they should shot the film in early 96 otherwise they would have little time on post production, looking back on the film it's pretty badly shot, the fight scenes are badly staged and the effects are badly done they look very Disney or something from a ride from Universal Studios.

The movie opens at the facility where Poison Ivy’s plants are being created. Mr. Freeze attacks there on the belief that a chemical involved in making them will aid his MacGregor’s syndrome research, and Batman and Robin get involved, and during the scuffle, one of Freeze’s mooks knocks Pamela into her chemicals. Freeze makes off with the chemical agent he needs, and barely escapes.

After Batman and Robin leave, Pamela gets up as Poison Ivy, swearing that Freeze will pay with the Caped Crusaders. She then reasons that she’ll blend right in at Bruce Wayne’s plant themed charity ball long enough to cause mayhem to lure the Dynamic Duo out and use her pheromone dust on them, which will drive a wedge between them.

After coming up with the plan, she gets in contact with a prisoner to give him the remaining Venom drug that she has in return for said prisoner going undercover in Freeze’s lair. The prisoner accepts the deal, and Ivy uses her planned rampage at the ball to get arrested and be sent to the prison, where she dusts the guards and slips her Venom into her contact’s cell, which he takes and becomes Bane, breaking out with Ivy.

Bane later offers his services to Freeze, and while he works with Freeze, he discovers Nora. When Ivy is told, she decides to frame Batman in her murder, and has Bane Smash Nora’s chamber and then tip Police off while Freeze is on a heist. When Freeze sees the Police there with his wife dying, he rushes her into a replacement chamber. Batman and Robin arrive to investigate, but thanks to Bane planting evidence, Freeze believes that Batman was responsible. The rest of the movie details how Freeze and Batman get in their escalating war while Robin can’t shake off Ivy’s effects on him.

Poison Ivy would look pregnant since Uma Thurman had her first child (Maya Hawke) in 1998.

reply

Wait what, the romantic comedy phase ended in 1997? People still make rom-coms dude.

reply

This movie would've still been shit even if it came out a year later because of the direction Schumacher took the film along with pressure from the studio. The end result is a film that's so bad it holds pure entertainment value within it's awfulness. It's one of the best bad movies ever.

A lot of G rated films in the mid 90's were camped up as hell.
