In what Era is this Movie set ?

I saw this movie on tv the other night and it was interesting but the thing that has be most perplexed about it is what time period it is supposed to be set in ? I know it was made in 1997 but much of the fashion and clothes seem to look 1970s. The university lecturer was always using that big old real to real tape machine, a guy playing foak songs on an acoustic guitar at the University and the general house decor all seemed 1970s aswell. A car that featured briefly could have been a late 70s model Mustang. On the other hand I was sure I saw what looked like a very 1990s looking radio/cassette or radio/CD player in the house. Also all that talk about computer editing, analysis and software made it seem like it was meant to be 1990s. Can someone enlighten me.
