What was with the mobile nude coverup scenes?

I actually thought the sequel was funnier, but I had to see this one to know how Austin Powers started.

They had this weird, ridiculous gag scene where Austin's walking around in...a house? A hotel suite?...totally naked, and he's surreptitiously being covered up by various objects in the room, including his girlfriend holding up a magnifying glass that just happens to obscure his privates from the camera. They had an ending scene with both of them naked and doing the same cleverly-hiding-the-privates-and-lady's-chest-with-objects gag.

In the opening credits of the sequel, they had Austin doing this exact same thing, with a ton of sexual jokes written into the objects used to hide his privates.

I didn't think it was very funny, just plain weird. Must be a British thing. Did anyone British laugh at those scenes?

Just because you didn't laugh doesn't make it "a British thing."
Other Americans probably thought it was funny.

This is pretty funny xD

I have to agree. Those bits were never funny and it went on for far too long.

Well, the premise is somewhat funny, but in the end, it's not that funny. However, it's a fun thing to do, and entertaining, so I don't see anything wrong with it.

My theater was howling during those scenes. I did notice with the Blu-Ray 1080p HD versions you can make out the pasties the actors are wearing though.

I don't find that kind of humour funny at all but in '97 it would have been a hit for many.

YOU'RE WEIRD.🙄

I could understand if you didn't find it funny, but I'm confused how you could find it weird. Austin Powers is a sex maniac, cracks sex jokes all the time and has chest hair in the shape of a penis. It seems perfectly in line with the character and humour.
