The major differences between book and movie (SPOILERS)

1. The book starts with Todd being 13 and ends after his high school graduation so it spans 4 years.

2. After Dusander tells Todd that he has a letter implicating him of his knowledge of a known war criminal, Todd in the following years still disturbed goes on a killing spree of his own killing hobos and winos as does Dussander when he lures a few to his house and buries the corpses in his basement.

3.Todds guidance counselor Ed French was involved with the grades thing in Junior High, it isnt' until 3 years later he realizes he was duped by Todd. he actually calls Todds grandfather to congratulate him for overcoming that litte trouble they had a few years back and Todds real grandfather has no idea whats hes talking about.

4. the patient that recognized Dussander had a major backstory. found out what happened to his wife and kids in the camps and goes into great detail of how he knows Dussander. And he is in the hospital with him over a period of a week or so and speaks to him from time to time. each time he talks to him his memory nagging at him and wondering how he knows him until it finally clicks.

5. The police are much smarter in the book. they have a good feeling that Todd knew all along he knew who Dussander was and are getting the evidence to prove it. Also, a bum comes forward to identify Todd as a suspect in all the homeless killings he had done.

6. and lastly the ending. the movie copped out big time. first by not showing how corrupt Todd had become as he got older. Killing bums when he had the urge but most of all killing Ed French with a shotgun and then taking his rifle and a backpack full of ammo to the freeway overpass which he had fantasized about throughout the book.

Having read the novella firstly I knew that the film would have been slightly " less Stephen king " and more Hollywood ..... But I totally agree with you in that the script writers of the film totally copped out , I mean in the movie Todd really killed the hobo in self defence and said he would report mr French for sexual assault just to save his skin .... Showing him to be bad person but nowhere near the extent of a sociopath that he was in the book .......

WOW! I already intended to read the novella at some point (HUGE King fan), as lit is always better than film renditions. I KNEW there was a lot more to Todd's flowering rage. Thanks to your post, it has moved FAR up on my to-read list. ? TFS!

Also, it's been years since I read the novella but I think Todd learns about Dussander from reading old war magazines in that belong to his friend's dad.
