Apostle and Sling blade

Do you ever see a connection with the 2 movies?

But you will when its over. Believe me, you will when its over.

reply

Yeah! Both have Duvall and Billy Bob.

reply

But there is more than that.
They both have the same type setting and vibe. Actually kind of end on the same note as well. Its like they were both related some how.

But you will when its over. Believe me, you will when its over.

Both films have a very similar feel and look. they are also both about self realization. both main characters affect all around them with out really trying or wanting to. Yes there are many similarities between these two films. They are also two of my fav films. I am not a religious man, but to me this film is beautiful on so many levels and watch it whenever it is on.

As to the ending of both films as the thread started stated. Yes, both Karl and Sonny are in prison at the start of the film. Karl in an institution and Sonny in a prision of those around him, his cheating wife and his paritioners who want him gone. In the end they both wind up back in prision, both because of they're own free will.

(Spoiler) Yeah I saw the connection - in the final scene as the credits role. Sonnie is using a SLING BLADE to cut down the weeds! And Karl, Billy Bob's character in Sling Blade, even uses the prisoner/chain gang scenario to explain what a sling blade is to the students that were "interviewing" him. In the DVD version of Sling Blade, Billy Bob explains how he got Robert Duvall to appear in his film and mentions "The Apostle" and how Duvall wanted Billy Bob in Duvall's film. So the homage was clearly intended.

i see the similarity as well. Actually for a while I thought Sam's character was played by Billy Bob Thornton (remembering his role of the simple man in Sling Blade)
But I must admit they don't really look alike at all, maybe I just watch too many movies and get all mixed up :)

reply

Apart from the obvious similarities (Duvall and Thornton alternating between leads and cameos), both APOSTLE and SLINGBLADE are unique in that they portray religious people in the rural South in a human and sympathetic light. And both films are about good men of faith who struggle to make good and find redemption after committing violent crimes.

Both movies must have done all of this very well, since I'm not religious at all, but I still enjoyed these films and really grew to like their main characters as people.

Yes, the guy who played Bill Cox in "Sling Blade" and Billy Bob Thorton (Billy's character
in this movie was as bad as Doyle Hargraves.).

DDuval's character in this movie becomes incarcerated for murder at the end of the movie like Thorton's character from "Sling
Blade".

reply

Yes, absolutely agree: "Sling Blade," made just a year earlier, also features Robert Duvall, Billy Bob Thornton and character actor Rick Dial, and like "The Apostle", it's a totally original story written and directed by its star, also set in the Deep South and features a prominent musician in a non-musical acting role-- Dwight Yoacham, just as June Carter Cash is here in "Apostle."

I love both films and regard them as rare gems in which all elements came together perfectly.

Both are equally fantastic movies. Both have Billy Bob and Robert Duvall in it, both directed by the main actors of each film (BB-SB & RD- Apostle) and both had Barry Markowitz as Cameraman.
