Why did Anastasia leave her grandma?

Why couldn't she and Dimitri live in the palace together, with Vlad and grandma? I feel like she JUST reunited with her grandma and then left without as much as a warning. What was so wrong with Paris?

She didn't want to live the life of royalty with all it's rules, and regulations, and proper behavior. Being a royal, she probably would not have been allowed to marry Dimitri.

Writers were cowards. I sure she could have stayed ,be royalty and , marry Dimitri. Someone
told me awhile they were trying to keep the mystery alive by not letting her get revealed.

Allowed? By who?

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

The filmmakers couldn't have had her live publicly with the Empress like a royal, because the fate of the real Anastasia hadn't been proven at the time the movie was made, and it was still a mystery. There had been speculation for decades that she had escaped and was still alive somewhere. Imposters were still claiming to be her. Since then,it has been proven that she was killed along with her family when she was 17 years old, because her remains were positively identified. (In the movie she is only 8 when her family is captured, presumably because a 27-year-old heroine wouldn't be as acceptable as an 18-year-old.)
Having Anastasia go off and live quietly with Dmitri perpetuated the mystery at the time of what had happened to her.

Thats honestly so true!! It really does add to the magic of the movie. I guess I never picked up on how they actually never announced her arrival, but it was something special between her and her grandma. Thanks for explaining this, it made me love the movie even more! :)

Been a while since I saw this... But they just eloped at the end right? They just ran off to get married, doesn't mean they won't come back and be in a big old Russian family in the Paris palace with grandmama.

Exactly. Anastasia's letter to her grandmother says she'll be coming back soon, and Sophie exclaims "They eloped!" as she reads the letter over Marie's shoulder.
