Why were Africans willing to engage in the slave trade?

Does modern-day Africa owe reparations to Americans who descended from slaves?

reply

Maybe. Good luck collecting.

Why were Africans willing to engage in the slave trade?
Because they've been doing it since the dawn of time. Just because they're from the same country and have the same skin color doesn't make them friends. If they're from the same tribe, they are enemies. And they would sell an enemy into slavery to eliminate them.

Hey folks,

The original poster asks, "Why were Africans willing to engage in the slave trade?" Well, they did it for the same reason Europeans and Americans engaged in the slave trade. They did it for the money! Not for any sense of human morality, but simply for the money.

Best wishes,

Well, the answer "money" is a bit misleading. Africa had more gold and silver than Europe, so they mostly exported gold and would not be interested in importing it.

They did however want three things Europeans had:

1. Finished goods.
2. Guns.
3. Use of European armies in local wars.

As stated, African views on slavery basically said it was okay as long as it was someone from another country.

And another thing, I hate it when people don't separate their signatures from their posts.

There's also a view that slavery in Africa was generally far different to the chattel slavery common to the Atlantic Slave Trade, so their cultural view of what they were doing was quite different.

They can't even afford not to have sex with infants to cure AIDS, let alone pay reparations.
