...Hollywood just had to throw in Christianity and the Bible.
Why do most Americans feel they have to foist Christianity upon everyone in the world?!

This movie was based on true events.

A better question is, why do so many people demand that every movie they see or book they read validate their beliefs? Only a very insecure person cannot brook being exposed to a belief to which he or she doesn't subscribe.

Also, religion is in the world, and so are religious people. Showing it is not an attempt to "foist Christianity upon everyone" as you so melodramatically put it. It is simply depicting the world as it is. In fact, one could say that the complete absence of religion in the VAST MAJORITY of films and tv shows (including those in the USA) is actually a rather unrealistic portrayal of the human race, which is overwhelmingly religious.

Your whiny, knee-jerk defensiveness resulting from being exposed, rather briefly mind you, to a bit of religion just shows that you are very insecure in your beliefs.

You can't be insecure in your beliefs when you have none.

Extremely well said. Thank you.

It was accurate to the culture of the period. What exactly are you so afraid of?

reply

Yet little regard given that the slaves were Muslims.

It's that man again!!

In this historical depiction you'd have preferred a more secular America? Golly, why even bring slavery into it then? That's not really my bag either.🐭

One thing that should perhaps be pointed out is the major efforts at abolition were led by religious organizations much like the modern-day civil-rights movement got its start in the Black Churches of the 1950's.

Take away the involvement of the churches, and very little is left of the fight against slavery.

reply

Steven Spielberg is definitely not someone who feels the need to foist Christianity on the world.

He's Jewish.

reply

I found it a positive surprise, and historically appropriate.
Hollywood is hardly known for pushing Christianity or Christian values.

reply

Yeah if anything it's the complete opposite.
