I was watching the movie on cable last night and really enjoying it. I stepped away for a moment. When I returned, Jake was having breakfast without Sandra and just about to meet Alice. What did I miss? What happened to Sandra? Did Jake kill her? If so, how and why? Was it for the money?

Yes, Jake killed Sandra. It was based on a coin toss, and not for any money. After killing Sandra, Jake put her body in the trunk of his car. He then had breakfast and met Alice. We the audience did not see him tossing the coin for Sandra's life; we learn this only at the end.
The previous response from jjturley is incorrect. Jake did NOT kill Sandra. He did put her in the trunk, but she was very much alive. She was killed when the injured Santini rear-ended them on the highway. Right before the crash, Alice heard Sandra thumping around in the trunk, but she dismissed the noise as engine trouble.
I have a new philosophy. I'm only going to dread one day at a time.

(I saw this movie dubbed in another language and the English part is barely audible thus lost a lot of lines...)
In the motel, when Sandra says she wants to go with him he says "wanna flip on it?" We don't see the coin or know what the alternative was...but you could assume that she didn't win and he put her in the trunk planning to kill her later on. Jake didn't plan on meeting Alice or taking anyone with him on the road. Before he and Alice leave the restaurant, he jokingly tells her that Sandra is in the trunk of his car. As it happens, Sandra is killed in the car accident when Santini is trying to warn Alice and Jake never gets the opportunity to kill her.
