Dice was 10x the villain Timothy was

I cannot believe this topic has not yet been brought up.

How, HOW, could anyone like, let alone love, this trailer trash thug?

Dice essentially purchases Billie. He tries to get her in bed on their first night out. He gets jealous when she does music vids semi-nude with semi-nude men (his excuse was she was uncomfortable, and she was, but its dead obvious he just didn't want any other men around her like that). He gets possesive & controlling when he orders her away from other producers who make offers (after all she is HIS cash cow, and he makes the excuse that they just want to get her in bed - excuse me, isn't this what you did?). He verbally assaults her friends and tells them to leave (chicks before dicks, Billie, chicks before dicks). He tries to cheat Tim out of $100,000 - a deal they made that Dice agreed to. When Tim comes around demanding to get paid Dice attacks and beats him and sends him to the hospital. Dice makes a condisending remark about Billie's mother and when she slaps him for it (which I might have done myself) he makes if very clear that he is ready and willing to hit her back.

Dice had the balls to claim he was saving Billie from Timothy. When Timothy kills him, he is saving Billie from Dice. It was perfect timing, too. Billie comes off as being suseptable to abusive relationships. She was coming under Dice's control. She was willing to forgive and forget everything he did. Had their relationship continued, Billie would be performing with black eyes while he sat back-stage drinking and snorting coke and counting the cash.

As a Mariah fan, I never got the chance to watch this film, but I finally got to yesterday. I agree with you that Dice was an abusive guy. He definitely got laid with Billie on the first date, and his abusive nature starts to show up when the Loverboy music video is made with the exotic male dancers.

And he didn't purchase Billie, he in many ways stole her from Tim. Tim's no saint either. You may consider his killing of Dice as a blessing for Billie, but it's open to interpretation what he could have done to her. At best, he would sue her, and at worst, he'd rape and kill Billie. I don't know if Billie wins by continuing a relationship with Dice that could have continued on an abusive path, though this movie tries to show the best in folks and at first glance, it makes us want to think that he's learned from that and for some folks they really do learn.

Perhaps the movie makers made this film to show the flaws in all of the characters intentionally, no one's perfect. At least they got Billie reunited with mom at the end.

I have to disagree. Dice felt as though he "discovered" Billie, and partially (or mostly) thanks to his romantic relationship with her, wanted her to be his protégé/project or whatever. Timothy was portrayed way more gangster-like than Dice. Dice was essentially a very good DJ who saw Billie as a chance to make it into production. It was when all the hangers-on, like the obnoxious public relations woman, started flocking to her that he began to unravel. The concept really isn't too dissimilar than "A Star Is Born." And, yes....He said terrible things to her friends but he felt out of place and ignored at the party, was drunk, and when you're drunk sometimes the truth comes out. Her friends really didn't have any talent.

throughout the movie Dice makes viewers uncomfortable but Billie always has a way of bringing him back and showing his softer side. For example, my favorite scene is in the bathroom after they get home from the award show. Here we see Dice has completely ruined a big night for her, was rude to reporters on television, threatened to make a scene at an after party, and even put her at odds with her friends. But when she says "None of this matters without you. you know I love you, right?" it shows that his true issue is that he is terrified of losing her as an artist and as a girlfriend and doesn't know if she realizes that. He doesn't want to be left behind. I cant say I totally blame him for that. He is very rough around the edges but Billie understands why he's acting out and that makes it a great love story in my opinion.
