The biggest problem with this movie ...

.. is this: with all the advanced technology, these bozos didn't build a cage that would withstand the acidy-blood of its captives?

reply

Yup, despite the vast amount of data available of the alien creature and its' capabilities over the centuries, the engineers of the united systems or whatever completely overlooked the fact that the alien creature has highly corrosive acid for blood and can use it as a weapon.

Not exactly very believable, but there you have it.

reply

Maybe there are only very few materials that can withstand a) the acid b) the force of an alien. Imho the acid blood is part of the "magic" of aliens. They are fine with it but science kind of hasn't figured out how it works. Yet. That's why they research them.

Maybe they could make a rubbery / polarizing silicon material that can withstand the acid but the alien could just claw through it.

reply

They needed to keep them suspended in a magnetic field. That will stop them.

reply

Uh, dude the United Systems Military wasn't aware that the Aliens would try to kill each other and use the acid to escape. I'm sure they thought it would be dangerous if you tried to provoke them. But seriously? You really expected them to worry about killing each other? That's partially ludacris

reply

Maybe not on purpose, but what about on accident? One accidentally gets hurt or damaged, and they know there's going to be highly corrosive acid pouring out onto their floors.

reply

@ripleyclone8, even if they didn't kill one of their own, they're capable of spitting acid. Why even kill one of their buddies, they could've just started spitting on the floor, or probably even quicker, just start spitting on the shatter proof glass that one of them tested it's jaw tongue on? Just really poor writing.

It would take a million light years for an alien to spit acid on the floor and try to escape. Look how big the Alien is. Just spitting acid wouldn't do Sht but create tiny little holes in the floor. You would need one giant Alien like in the film to escape through that thick heavy steel. Don't kid yourself man.

reply

On the floor, yes, but not the window. It would suffice to spit it only on certain strategic points of the glass, for the whole window's surface to become unstable and easily breakable. Given their strength, the aliens could leap up against the weakened glass and through it without much, if any, harm done to them: the window would blow in a million tiny pieces under the weight of three aliens.

reply

Never had chemistry class back in your school days? Glass is not affected by acids, that's why you store acids in glass vials. So the acid should reallly have no effect at all on the window.

reply

As a matter of fact, that are certain acids that can eat away at glass.

Anyway, following the movie's logic, the alien's acidic blood can eat through glass, as demonstrated by Ripley at the end, when she flicks a drop of her blood on a window to kill the newborn. If Ripley's subdued version of alien blood can do that, the pure blood of the aliens should definitely destroy the view panel. Either it does the trick or it doesn't, and they went for option one. So they should have stuck to it; you can't just have it one way and not the other for convenience.

reply

wait- are you serious? regular creatures of virtually EVERY species on planet Earth, like non extremely violent animals, fight with one another and even kill each other from time to time

the concept that some sort of advanced military scientists didn't consider the possibility that one of the most violent organisms in the universe with ACID blood might fight amongst themselves and bleed through the floor?

THAT is ludicrous and borderline unbelievable. Again, FISH and flipping monkeys fight amongst each other from time to time, and you're acting like a scientist would not consider it possible for some XENOMORPHS to do the same?

I'm referring to just natural predatory fights but also the scientists were likely aware they were somewhat intelligent

its absurd.

she fell through a hole, and was never seen again

reply

That is just poor writing which this movie is full of in my opinion. The number one thing ANYBODY knows about the Alien is that one of its defense mechanisms is its acid for blood. Why anybody would ignore that is beyond me. That ONE little fact made dealing with it pretty difficult especially on a space vessel in deep space.

reply

The biggest problem with this movie ...

It was made!

reply

It may be my favorite movie.

Short Cut, Draw Blood

reply

That's a very good point - although one may not anticipate the aliens killing one of their fellows to destroy the floor, it should be obvious that one of them could easily become injured in some way, and bleed that way.

A massive oversight.

reply

forget about one xenomorph killing another to escape, what about simply animals FIGHTING one another because they're predatory and sharing the same space?

all kinds of animals on Earth do that with each other.

It's absolutely unacceptable that a scientist wouldn't consider that. For gods sake if you put two big lions in a cage together at some point they would probably fight. The same would easily probably apply to xenomorphs.

lets not kid ourselves

she fell through a hole, and was never seen again

reply

no, it's having a french director, these guys couldn't direct in the 20th century, but recently they seem to learn from hollywood.

reply

It’s not specified what kind of acid run through the veins of these aliens, but to be safe, the cage and for that sake the whole building should’ve been built in high quality armed concrete mold cast in place, that is without joints, preferably with a powder aggregate that intensifies the smoothness of the surface. That should stop attack from any acid.
On the biological side, blood running through veins in living beings carries oxygen to the muscles and other parts of the body, specifically to the brain, any other liquid without these qualities would not be ratified for life. My conclusion has to be that the creature called alien has to be a robot that uses acid as a form for alternative destructive aggression.

reply

Who cars?? It was hilarious and made Weyland-Yutani all the more cartoonishly dumb.

In 200 years maybe the information that the aliens have acid for blood was lost. Maybe they just didnt knew it has acid for blood.

reply

The alien-acid problem could have been partially solved if the aliens had been kept in separate cages. That would have made it rather difficult for any single alien to escape.

But no, I guess the script writers just could not come up with a better idea for the alien escape. So they had to make the scientist so incredibly stupid as to put several aliens into one cage.
