Why put the murder weapon in a plastic bag?

I grew up on this movie. Really love it. Watching it for the first time in probably a decade. One thing i can't get. Why would they put the murder weapon in a plastic bag? You clean everything up in the room. Why wouldn't you just clean the weapon and put it back on the table it came from? Instead you put it in a plastic bag for what? Guess you could claim ignorance, but as clean as they were on everything else, i feel like they should know better...

Well, the letter opener wasn't the murder weapon; the weapon that did the killing was an SS agent's gun, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be called murder as he was defending the President, regardless of the circumstances.

Anyway, I think Gloria kept it so that - if it might ever become necessary - they'd have evidence that the woman had stabbed the President - fingerprints/blood. But perhaps her stronger motivation was to have something with which to manipulate the P. in future.
