'Latino Laughers'

Roger Ebert has claimed on two occasions that whenever an American movie character is shown in Mexico, there will always come a scene in which he will be surrounded by a gang of tough locals who will laugh at him and call him a "gringo." I knew he was referring to Charlie's (Andy Comeau) predicament in this movie, but I have never seen it done elsewhere.

Is this an actual cliché, or did Ebert just see it in this movie and then overgeneralize?
