reply

Er ... is it not a studio film set?

reply

And wasn't it knocked down at the end?

reply

I don't think it really exist/ed, but it looks a MANY of the small apartment complexes near where I live, in the Fairfax/Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles (near the Farmer's Market) which is where I imagined it being located when I first saw the movie.

La Fortuna is actually El Cabrillo in West Hollywood (the exterior...anyway) There's presently one for sale for $ 4,350,000.00. They were built in the 1920's and lots of Hollywood/Celebrity History there.

You are way off on your price. The courtyard was renovated in 2005 and units were listed at $800,000 but failed to sell until the priced was dropped by approx. 50%. The last unit sold this year for $420,000.

Yes, I think it was a set based on real buildings. I totally loved the apartment complex. I liked how the apartments faced inward towards the courtyard which encouraged residents to interact with each other.

It kind of reminded me of the complex that Naomi Watts' character stays in in Mulholland Drive. Did anyone else think that?

reply

It actually reminded me of the apartment complex in Melrose Place, minus the pool. It looks likes such a lovely place to live.

reply

yeah i thought it looked like the one in mullholland drive too

The "‘Til There Was You" apartment building, a.k.a. "La Fortuna" in the movie, is known In real life, as "El Cabrillo", and located at 1832-1850 North Grace Avenue in Hollywood, California 90028. The Building has a long and interesting life in the film industry. In fact, "El Cabrillo" was constructed in 1928 by order of legendary film director and producer Cecil B. DeMille to house his out of town actors. "El Cabrillo" is an excellent example of Spanish Colonial Revival design. It was designed by a couple of well-known local courtyard housing architects: Arthur and Nina Zwebell, who built several Los Angeles courtyard style apartment buildings in the 1920’s. many of which are now on the National Register of Historic Places. "El Cabrillo" was LISTED by California State Historic Resources Commission on 3/30/05.

It was rebuilt on a soundstage but it is the building noted above.. It was also used for the pilot of Chuck then again rebuilt on a soundstage to be used for the rest of the series.. While watching the film again today I was also curious and did some research and found what I just told you and the person above me.. Beautiful place isn't it..
