This is a really awesome true story about my ASHBY ancestors!
Its how I got started in genealogy. I read the book first, Janice
W Windle is my cousin. then bought the video and cried!
abt 5th pg in discusses my 3x grandparents Mary and John Smothers
It was filmed in Seguin Tx where I lived in 4-5th grades. I was so
impressed I flew into San Antonio, my girlfriend who now lived in WI
flew in too,we stayed with her mother in Seguin and she had bought us
both tickets to go on the now infamous TRUE WOMEN tour. I took gobs of
pictures and cant tell ya how incredible it was to walk, touch and feel
the homes, furniture, look thru the gun slot holes at Sarah Ashby McClure
Braches now restored Peach Creek Mansion. The nite before we went there
a lightning storm has severed a branch off a huge long oak tree branch
right over the gravesites west of the mansion and missed every tombstone!
The only thing different is Bart McClure was not the one who died from the
snake bit, Sarah's 2nd husband Charles Braches was the one who died.
Its such a moving and involved story not all situations could be put into it,
they tried but had to edit lots out to make it just the mini series they
did for tv. Idella is missing, which is the spokesman in the book, but
she would have been hard to portray I think. My dear friend songwriter
Betty Brodt, her sis Patsy wrote a song called True Women but they did not
use it for the film, however, we saw her and remembered her and my friend
too, so gave us a cassette of the song, its wonderful, I wished they'd
used it, but the ending is so true, Euphemia, Sarah did outlive them all, but
one daughter of Sarahs, who inherited the Peach Creek mansion and eventually
gifted it to the Tx Historical society who restored it as original as possible.
It was the most worthwhile trip back to TX I ever made. My 3x grandmother
Mary Harris Ashby is Sarah and Euphemia Texas Ashby's sister. In the book
she was the Medicine Woman on the Runaway Scrape Sarah led the 1000 women
and children on from Santa Anna. Bartlett McClure lived a nice long life
and was a TX Ranger. None of their own children lived longer than them.
We met Mrs Virginia King Bergfeld [Janice's grandmother], Euphemia's grandmother & and she still lives in the ole King house. Also saw Euphemia's home that also was restored and all the King gravestones not that far from the home embraced with heavy wrought iron fence now. Great tour and wonderful trip, forever embellished in my memories. Janice has written two sequels now to this book, Hill Country and one abt Lee Woods, a desc of Janice's family, think he was a lawyer and got into some scraps, I havent read that one yet.
Nena Smothers, 3x grand dau of Mary Harris Ashby md John Bate Smeathers sr
one about her family,

cooknena,

"It was filmed in Seguin Tx"

No, it wasn't.

But then, your memory may have been embellished.

Who is Betty Brodt?

I bought the DVD at Wal-Mart for $5.50. I don't know if they still have it or not. I was so excited when I saw it. I loved it when I saw it on tv when it originally aired (and didn't tape it) and wanted to see it again.

I was in True Women. I was a child that died from being shot with an arrow by the indians. They cut my entire part, though, because they said it was too gruesome to see a dead child on TV.

What do you mean whats it like?

I bought the DVD in the sale bin at Wal-Mart for 5.88 I think it was.......I saw this when it was originally televised, and I thought it was quite well done for a tv movie. (They don't have the huge budgets of regular films, you know.)
The actors do a great job. Angelina Jolie was fantastic, as several posters and reviewers mentioned. My favorite part of the movie is when Dana Delany's character leads the Comanches off on a wild goose chase so her little sister can get away safely. I love it when her horse flies over that embankment, and the Comanches just sit on their horses in stunned silence.
By the way, Michael Greyeyes does a great job in this film as Tarantula. I love that black hat he wears. My second favorite part of the movie is when Dana Delaney goes to help her servant who was taken by the Indians out in the yard, and Tarantula saves her life.
I have both of the books by Janice Woods Windle. If you haven't read them, you should.....especially True Women.

You can buy it at most Walmart's for less than $6.00. I bought mine for $5.50.

Bought mine at walmart as well. I love this movie. Finally a decent portrayal of Removal. The first time I watched it I didn't even know who Angelina Jolie was. I only realized it was her after I bought the DVD.

I just found this Movie True Women at my local walmart for $5.50..
could you tell me if there is a sequel or part 2 to this movie???

reply

part 2 is actually on the dvd. u have to fast forward the credits

When the women are being attacked, there is a scene I have a question about.
Dana Delany shoots that guy that goes into their wagon.
She grabs the baby and starts singing.
I wanted to know if anyone knows that song she is singing.
I have:
Eyes are blue, cheeks are red (3x)
Lips are sweet as gingerbread, then she trails off continued lyrics.
I would love to get the rest if anyone knows the title of that song or further lyrics, that would be great :)

reply

The song is a variation on Soldier's Joy called "Love Somebody" or "I am my mama's darling child". You can search google for it.

(Also, I know this post is very old... just hoping you're still around!)

I just checked my DVD (which I purchased at Walmart) and I don't have a "part two" after the credits, it just goes right back to the main menu. Bummer.

reply

Is it two sided?

reply

After you get through the first part go to scene selection and click the third set of scenes and that is the beginning of part two.

reply
