Wow! This was amazing!!!

I can't believe I didn't notice this way back in 1990s and I just saw it lately. I was too wrapped up in XMen TAS and BAtman TAS back then.

This show was so dark and gritty. It was more mature than many live action movies.

I cannot imagine how a new spawn animated series could be better than this one.

It's a shame that a lot of people want "dark" movies (especially after the success of the Dark Knight) now and many people now don't know about this.

Lol, I knew when it aired, I was like how come more tv comic book series can't be as dark as this, I was 11 when it came out, my mom flipped when she saw what was in it, she was like "What kind of cartoon series plays at midnight?"

Amazing is right! Absolutely gorgeous drawing and animation. The story has a completely different atmosphere than the comic, it's gritty and depressing as hell, almost made me cry. One of the best animated films ever!

I watched 9 of the 18 episodes and it keeps getting worse. For those who are not comic book readers, the 90s is often remembered as one of the worst eras of comics. The reasons are a lot of the worst stories ever published and the most ugly, exaggerated art is from that time, but also one of the biggest problems is the constant attempt to replicate Alan Moore's Watchmen (probably considered to be the most influential graphic novel) dark and violent atmosphere. Todd McFarlane's Spawn is the perfect representation of this. Violence for the sake of violence. "It's rad, edgy and dark".

Nothing happens in the animated series. It's just Spawn having flashbacks, sulking so hard that a drunk homeless man constantly tries to cheer him up and watching people get brutally murdered when he could've easily helped them. The subplots are boring, centering around Spawn's best friend that married his wife after he died discovering some huge conspiracy that is pointless considering what we already know about who is behind it. Some of the voice work is just people reading lines without any kind of emotion, and important characters in the story included, like Spawn's ex wife and his best friend. The animation is OK, but some people may find it ugly.

The only time I felt just a little bit of excitement because I think something was going to happen, was when a character named Angela is introduced to never appear again (I'm 9 episodes in, I hope she does appear again). Believe it or not, Angela, the most interesting character so far that only appeared for 5 minutes tops, was not even created by Todd McFarlane but by Neil Gaiman (Sandman, American Gods). McFarlane even sued Gaiman because of characters (Angela and Marvelman).

The impression the series gave me is just the same as the comics. It's just "cool" character design, over the top violence and a poorly written history. Sorry for this rant, I know this show has its fans, but I hate it what it represents.
