Character analysis of Jack Torrance

I am a huge fan of Stephen King. I've read his novels, seen the adaptions, you name it. By far, Jack Torrance is my favorite character created. In Kubrick's adaption, Jack was a sociopathic mess from the start, but went fully insane once he and his family went to the Overlook Hotel. Was inevitable, given Jack, in Kubrick's film, was a re-incarnation of the caretaker in the 1920's. The Jack we know and love in the book and miniseries was a good person. Decent guy but flawed like every human. Jack loved Wendy and Danny and vice-versa. Yet, Jack's flaws and inner-demons kick in once the Torrance family goes to the Overlook Hotel. The primary entity/the Hotel-monster and the spirits under it's control i.e. Grady, Lloyd, Horace Derwent, etc. influenced Jack to drink alcohol. Jack also went crazy from cabin fever.

After Jack became drunk from the hotel's phantom booze, went crazy from cabin fever and for both reasons believed the Hotel's lies and brainwashing about Wendy and Danny being against him and never having loved him, Jack lost it and eventually decided to do the Hotel's bidding. To kill his family. The main demonic entity and the other spirits possessed Jack at that point. At the end Jack regains his sanity, sobers up and fights through the supernatural possession, telling Danny to run away quick and remember how much he loves him. The Hotel, realizing it will be difficult to kill Danny now that his father has sobered up, regained sanity and will help his family escape, kills Jack by smashing his face with the roque mallet in Jack's own hands.

By far a tragic character.
