Why does Danny save the play?

Near the end of the miniseries, as Dick, Wendy and Danny are trying to get out of the Overlook and to the Artic Cat, Danny goes into another room to get a stack of papers from beside the typewriter to take out with him. It appears to be the play Jack was initially writing, but no explanation is provided why he would take the time to get it. Is this a plot thread from the book that was in the miniseries and then removed except for this scene?
