Amazing!

I couldn't care less what other people think, but there is just something that I highly enjoy about this mini-series. Quite possibly because it follows the book?

I read the book in high school and it was the first King novel I had ever read. I was a reluctant reader at the time but it was one that I just could not put down. I even read it at home which was rare for me. I absolutely loved the book and instantly became a King fan which led me to pick up his other novels afterwards.

I had seen Stanley Kubricks version of the film prior to reading the novel. Needless to say it scared the hell out of me and I was obsessed with it because it was truly a shocking horror film. After reading the book I discovered how different and more in depth the story and characters were from the 1977 film. I was aware the 1997 miniseries existed but I had heard nothing but negative feedback from other people (Probably Kubrick fans) so I never bothered to rent it. Plus I was told it was just a remake of Kubricks version instead of Stephen Kings own vision of the novel on screen. I did not want to see a remake of Kubricks film.

However one day I stayed home sick from school and I was watching the Sci-Fi channel and I noticed on the guide Stephen Kings "The Shining" was coming on next. I figured it was Kubricks version and waited for it to come on. I was disappointed upon discovering it was the miniseries but there was nothing else on and I figured what the hell. After the first episode I was shocked because nobody had bothered to tell it was faithful to the book! I would have rented it in a heartbeat if I had known.

I loved the miniseries because it was almost 100% faithful to the novel. Steven Weber did an excellent job playing Jack Torrance and really nailed the character I had envisioned while reading the book.

Stanley Kubricks version is still great as a standalone horror film but personally I prefer the novel to the 1977 adaptation and therefore I prefer Kings version over Kubricks. I'm not biased like most other people who carry on arguments over which version is better and whatnot. I like them both and own both versions on DVD. I just prefer Kings version because it is literally like reading the book almost page by page. People need to stop arguing because their both great movies regardless of which one you like better.

Yes, that's my attitude. I like when I watch an sK adaptation and it reminds me of the original story.

I'm not a Kubrick fanboy. In fact I've only ever seen three of his movies, A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining. I don't really care much for A.C.O or E.W.S, I just think his adaptation of The Shining is one of the greatest horror movies of all time and this is as bad as the average person says.

I love this one too
