On The Practice & Ally McBeal they'll frequently press Stop while an elevator is moving and have a quick elevator confrence (or well, usually fight). I've always been curious...can you really do that? Or would it kill you?

But, there's usually a buzzer alarm thing that goes off when you hit the stop button, and doesn't stop going off till you move again.
Yes, you just press the button and it stops, although as the previous poster said, an alarm goes off.
