During the William Hinks storyline who gave Lindsay the puppy?

*possible spoilers for anybody who hasn't yet watched the whole series*

I'm re-watching the series after about 15 years and this is starting to bug me. When Lindsay accuses Hinks of sending her the puppy he freaks out ("WHAT PUPPY?") and she mentions this back at the office. Later it's found dead. I keep thinking it was revealed that somebody else (another client) sent it and it was revealed later in the season who but I can't be sure I haven't already missed it. I'm watching it on fan made dvd's so it's always possible something was cut out. Any help?

since s.1 there was talk of another serial killer but for some reason that bstory line never came to fruitation.
