I loved the show. But it was progressively getting more and more outrageous... and not in a good way. Especially because it was spinoff of another show that took place in the same town and hospital. But on GH there were never vampires running around the halls of the hospital... so wtf? It didn't make any sense.
This was also my main gripe about turning it into a supernatural soap, it was a spin-off set in the same city as
General Hospital yet none of this stuff crossed over? It started off as a show about the hospital, interns, staff and their relationships and while it did have some moments that were not realistic (it was still a soap after all) for the most part, it was still believable. Although I did like Allison and Rafe as a couple, I started to lose interest once the vampire stuff started. And I say this as a fan of shows like
The X-Files and
Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but those shows were obviously intended to have supernatural stories and sub-plots. In the first few years of the series, there was very little suggestion that
Port Charles was supposed to be like
Dark Shadows and
Passions.
My favorite storylines were all the pre-arc ones - by the end of 2000 I was becoming disillusioned with the show, as one of my favorite couples (Frank and Courtney) were ruined and Courtney was written out of the series in such a inept and insulting way (she was literally there one day and gone the next, without a real send-off), and I think in retrospect the character was deliberately written into a corner, as the writers were too lazy to give her more of a story and they probably knew at that point that they were going to take the show in another direction and maybe they thought the character didn't fit anymore. Frank was my favorite male character (Chris being a close second) but toward the end of Courtney's run he became increasingly self-righteous and hypocritical toward her, conveniently forgetting his own past transgressions, and the fact that he had conspired and plotted with her to break up Joe and Karen, and to steal the DL56 money from Chris. They also had a history which could have been expanded upon. I never bought the Frank/Karen pairing and I feel that Frank was ruined before he was made into the Avatar (and later, a vampire) although I'm sure Jay Pickett was sexy as hell walking on the dark side. I never took to Ian either; I never understood why the writers didn't give Chris and Eve a chance as a couple when Julie was out of the picture (I was sorry to see Julie go to, but at least she made a brief return to wrap things up and say goodbye to Chris). As I said, I liked Rafe/Allison but I hated how Livvie turned on her "best friend" and don't even get me started on the Tess nonsense!
Having said all of that, I agree that it's unfortunate that the show's cancellation left viewers hanging. A TV movie to wrap things up might have given fans some sense of closure.
