Yeah. O.K. Ummm, this is like a sort of say-anything post about Greek mythology. like what you like, fave. gods/goddesses, fave. myths, etc. I'm interested in hearing what others gotta say.

reply

ok then, my fav story would be the one about the hunter Orion. since my sign is the scorpio, and that tells the story of how the scorpio became a sign.

"Fortuna audaces javat"

reply

Thank you for replying.

I have way too many to name, but I like Narcissus (sp) and Echo. Just goes to show what being vain can do to you. I also like the story of Medusa, partially because I sometimes feel sorry for her, tho not everyone understands why.

reply

by the way, what's that mean? "Fortuna audaces javat" ??

reply

Is this Latin? (my brother took Latin classes some years ago).

Just guessing (fortuna should be fortune=luck) but does this mean:

"Fortune favors the daring." ???

kaveirious

reply

Yes pretty much, im redin the odyssey right know and it is something the gods like to tell to the mortals.

reply

Fortune favors the bold. ;)

It should be: audaces fortuna juvat

Not: fortuna audaces javat

reply

uh...I'm reading and really likin' the Aeneid right now....but that's Italian.........*sigh*

reply

"Fortuna audaces javat"--so, how do you pronounce it, all you Latin scholars?, :-)

reply

No it's not. The Aeneid was written by Virgil in the 1st century BC, in, you guessed it, LATIN.

reply

Latin was spoken by the Romans who were, you guessed it, Italian.

Well my favorite myth is that about Hercules, but in Greek mythology he is really know as Heracles. I have never actually understood this, the name of his stepmother is in there. She hated him, so much she did everything in her power to kill him. She eventually forgave him though. And when he died and went to Mt. Olympus she let him marry his half-sister, Hebe. My favorite God is Ares. I figure this is mainly because I have a violent nature when I get angry. Otherwise I have no idea why I like Ares. I pretty much love all of the Greek myths. I have some Greek heritage, so anything Greek is good to me.

reply

only the god half of him went to mount olympus, part of heracles still went to the underworld

reply

Thank you for being pedant.

Well, the stepmother in question was HERA, Queen of the gods and wife to Zeus, Herc's "biological" father. Zeus had a bad habit of catting around, just because he could, and his catting with Alcmene, the MARRIED mortal queen of Tiryns with her husband Amphitryon, produced the hero. Zeus took on Amphitryon's likeness in order to sleep with Alcmene, even stopping the sun in its course for three days to take advantage of the real Amphitryon's absence.

And in her prototypical jealous wife/sister/goddess mode, Hera blamed, not Zeus, not even Alcmene, but the innocent offspring of Zeus' lust, Hercules. She started with sending two serpents to kill the infant Herc as he lay in his cradle with his mortal brother Iphicles - but while Iphicles lay there and screamed in fear, Herc, chuckling, reached up and strangled the serpents with his baby hands. Tough dude to kill.

Can I just say I hate The Odyssey? I really really do.

reply

Previously to writing a 10 page paper on the Odyssey I was a fan...

After...well, I think if you can name more than 25 characters offhand, you know the book too well. Maybe after a few months break I will once again regain my love for the epic...however, currently I wish to use it for firewood. It's cold here in Michigan :)

reply

You think writing a 10 pages paper on it is hard? I've translated the whole thing into Norwegian. Not just pieces, the whole thing.

Faves

Gods: Hypnos, Hades,
Goddesses: Artemis, Hecate, Persephone
Demigod: Hermes,
City: Thebes
Mortal: Ariadne
Muse: Urania, Melpomene
Others: Medusa, Pandora

reply

Hermes was a demigod?

reply

Tecnically, yeah. But then again, wasn't Athena? Fact is, his mother was a nymph, like Athena's. I know he really counts as a god, but the only real gods and such are those from a union of pure gods, i.e. Persephone, etc.

My fav Greek myth has to be 'Theseus and the Minotour' love it, great story and I am currently working on writing a script of it, to one day turn it into a movie, If I can get going as a screenwriter. Its just such a good story a movie must be made of it.

medea is cool!

My Favorite goddess was Hera, the goddess of marriage, and Athene (Athena), Warrior Goddess of Wisdom and Crafts.

My favorite gods are Ares, god of war, and Apollo, God of Healing, Prophecy, medicine, music, the sun...

My favorite myths deal with Hera, and (or) Athene, also myths about the gods and their troubles.
But i love to read all the myths, though there aren't many movies that deal with them :(

But I must admit I liked the Iliad (book) better than The Odyssey (book).
They should make a movie of it, that stays true to the Greek myths.

reply

It is "Fortuna audacis iuvat" Nominative, ablative, present verb. Fortune favours the bold
Let's study a little bit of latin

For whoever said that Athena was a demigoddess, you're wrong. She's actually is a full goddess but is a demi-Olympian. Her mother, Metis (Zeus's first wife whom he swallowed when he found out about a prophecy about Metis bearing a son more powerful than he was), was a Titaness. The Titans, contrary to popular belief, are full-fledged gods just like Zeus, Ares, Poseidon, Hades, etc., especially when the majority of those Gods are descended from them. Heck, one of them, Hyperion the sun god, is actually a Titan himself rather than an Olympian while another, Aphrodite the goddess of love, isn't even a Titan nor Olympian but rather a goddess who's a descendent of Uranus and the sea (When Uranus was castrated by Zeus' father Kronos, his seed and genitals fell into the sea and the sea gave birth to Aphrodite.). If anything, Athena's a demi-Olympian and a demi-Titan but not a demigod.
