Odysseus was lost... The only way to get back was to go through the straight. In the story, there wasn't really a "cave" that they went through...

Circe had him go see the prophet in Hades in order to get directions to go back home...

There was an excellent line in the movie that states that Odysseus's life would not be remembered for his military prowess or great ability to 'think' (although this was remembered), but mainly for his journey and everything he had to endure just to reach home... The gods didn't want to kill him, but made him into an example that man cannot live without the gods. And if he thought he could, the gods would show why they are not to be mettled with.

In summary: Odysseus HAD to go through all of his trials and hardship. He HAD to take his men through the straight of Scylla and Charybdis.. His journey is what was remembered and recorded.. it was his Odyssey.

Very well said!

Yes, in the book it was a 'strait', a narrow sea passage Odysseus had to go through in order to get home.

Scholars have often associated the perilous passage with the Strait of Messina between Italy and Sicily, but of course all the locations Odysseus visited may be entirely fictional.

I think the movie turned it into a cave (was it the Blue Grotto in Malta?), which is really silly to sail into, because it's easier to visualize special effects in a dark cave than in bright daylight, which would mercilessly expose all the details.
