Did Dale Secretly Love Peggy?

Did Peggy reject Dale at some point? What else would explain his irrational hatred for her and his constant need to remind everyone (i.e. Hank) that he has the superior wife?

Is a past relationship ever hinted at? They would seem to be perfect for each other. On the rare occasions they work together or hang out without Hank, they have an amazing rapport.

Of course, a relationship was out of the question as long as status-conscious Peggy knew she could do better, and let's not hint (although it would have been delicious) that Bobby might have been Dale's son. Bobby's resemblance to Cotton proves their relationship, and Dale's to Bug rules out the possibility that Cotton fathered Dale.

I don't think Dale necessarily HATED Peggy, but it's plain that he's not fond of her. I think it's that he probably sees the traits in Peggy that he has and doesn't like them. You have to take into consideration that both of them are not the most mentally stable of people: Peggy is a low-level egomaniac and Dale is extremely paranoid. Maybe, like why Rocky says he loves Adrian: together, they fill each other's "gaps".

The argument that Dale is not masking his true feelings is that he's utterly incapable of deception.

He planted ants on Hank's lawn so that Hank would hire him to kill them and you say Dale is incapable of deception?

Well ... incapable of getting away with it.

Not to mention when he made Nancy think her face was disfigured so that he could sue the tobacco industry.

Dale does have the hotter wife than Hank, but sadly his (Dale) wife is a two faced slut who cheats on him.

reply

Not as far as he knew.

I don't remember offhand; did Dale ever gloat over other wives' infidelity?

reply

Did he ever find out about another wife cheating? I remember the episode where Dale was going to donate a kidney to his and the guys' favorite drag racer, John Force, and he put Hank in charge of being him until he got out of the hospital. When he was about resume his own "duties", Dale asked Hank if he slept with Nancy. Hank, of course, says no and Dale yells out "Too late!"

He seemed crazy about Nancy and annoyed by Peggy from the episodes I've seen, but I haven't seen all of them yet.

The only episode when they actually get along for a short while was "Full Metal Dust Jacket.

And the one where Peggy got roped into selling kitchenware and Rusty Shackleford showed up to get Dale to stop using his name.

And the one where, along with Minh, they formed an investment group based on observing Bill's buying habits.

I think people have made valid points about Dale not liking Peggy and why. Here's my two cents.

Hank is Dale's most intelligent and reliable friend. Peggy 'gets in the way' of Dale's time with Hank. Peggy wants time with Hank, whereas Nancy was largely content to leave Dale to whatever he was doing so she could do whatever *she* was doing.. ha ha. Boomhaurer never keeps a woman around for long to get in the way, and Bill.. well, Bill is Bill. He *can't* keep a woman around for long.

Dale doesn't like anyone or anything to interfere with his latest scheme, and Peggy is often in the way.

To answer your question about some romantic past between Peggy and Dale, no, it is never even hinted at, in any episode, that they ever had any romantic relationship.
