Tony Scott, The Falling Man

After Tony Scott's death, I decided to finally get around to watching The Hunger DVD's I had lying around. One thing that sort of peaked my interest were the bleak, pessimistic and sometimes fatalistic bookends to the episodes, directed by Scott himself.

One episode from the second season really raised my eyebrows, The Falling Man, based on a story by David J. Schow.

To recap, the episode stars A. Martinez as an author and architect who's written books on building design, though never actually designed a building. He begins an intense relationship with a strange woman that turns out to be a real-life muse of the supernatural variety, leading to his designing an architectural marvel. After almost compromising his artistic principles for a big payday, two thugs show up and crush his hands, causing him to double down on his original vision.

The real creepy part, considering the eventual fate of Tony Scott, comes in the final two scenes, when the muse reveals herself to Martinez as he stands atop his building, revealing that she's the one behind his crushed hands. He curses her before angrily announcing his plans to completely sell-out and replicate his design for any and all who apply. She responds by summoning a blast of energy(!) that throws him off the building, the victim of an apparent suicide.

The final scene has the muse literally changing her face and devoting her energy to a new artist, a fictional film director, shown in newspaper clippings, that looks suspiciously like Scott, wearing his trademark ballcap!
