Ms. Harkness and gloves?

she wears gloves all the time... even in bed reading a book... why? I thought maybe she had a hand cream under the gloves but none of the other women seem to do this.

I wondered about that myself. I realized that women wore gloves as they aged due to age spots and not wanting sun exposure to keep their lily white complexions, which is also why they wore hats in the day. After all she is a vain woman and her looks is her trade.

The black ones she had on were when she was reading a newspaper or something in print, probably as to not get black ink on her fingers and nails. I hated when I received the newspapers with too much ink not quite dry yet and that was in more recent times.

I think of it as being more symbolic - something along the lines of she can't keep her "black" past behind, or she has "dirt" on her hands to hide. It is wierd, though.

A few days ago I happened on a few short interviews she did about The Grand. (Evidently her husband had not known who her part was when she began it, he was somewhat taken aback.) She mentioned the gloves, though not enough explanation for me - she said she had chatted with a (retired) prostitute of 90 who told her that to be realistic one thing she should do was to never go without gloves, I assume she specified the sort SH wore in The Grand. To be worn ALWAYS. So that's what SH did.
