college

I love this movie, but what IS it with movies and TV shows about kids in college - Freshmen, especially - getting these MASSIVELY huge dorm rooms?! I've never seen such a thing in my life! The ones I've seen / lived in were about half the size of their ONE room, and certainly didn't have a private bathroom!!

reply

So true, I think the same thing every time I see a college movie.

reply

True... But weren't they at a prestgious colege? I mean, one guy was a genious and got in through scholarship, and the other had his dad pay his way in.

Maybe the richer schools can afford such a luxury

reply

They were just at a normal private college. Basically if you're smart enough and/or have enough money, you can get in anywhere. Josh was smart enough to get a full scholarship so he didn't have to pay any tuition. Cooper was rich enough that he could go there even though he didn't have the good grades.

Always remember - half the people you know are below average.

Accually, the one college that I plan to go to this fall has it's own Bathroom and kitchen in each dorm room and each kid gets his own bedroom. But It's Christain college in TN, maybe it's either a southern thing or a Christain college thing, or this college might just be rare, end result, it does happen at some colleges.

i have a private bathroom muahaha

reply

I think it's peculiar to the college you will go to. Besides, you'd be surprised how rich those Evangelical schools are...especially the ones founded by or supported by televangelists.

My college had moderate sized dorm rooms for freshmen. Two per room with two futon-like beds to help save space. They did have a sink and a medicine cabinet, but those were the only amenities. And they didn't have air conditioning. Only the upperclassmen had air conditioning.

reply

It's just a movie. I am sure dorms do not really look like that!

reply

I always just assumed it was to make filming easier. If the dorm was sized realistically, even with a removed wall, the camera wouldn't be able to film a lot of it... and the actors would be tripping over things the whole time.

Although, if you re-arrange your furniture smartly, you can maximize the space you do have. That's what I always do.

The Book Is Always Better

reply

Dorm rooms in movies are always larger than life, just like cabins on trains and cruise ships and bathrooms on airplanes.

reply

And don't forget how almost no movie characters live in a single story house (unless they're really poor) and how none of them live in an apartment unless it's a big city.

At least they had rooms. The dorms at my school were getting so crowded that by the time I graduated they were putting up dividers in the lounges to turn them into a few extra bedrooms. I'm so glad I commuted.

University of Louisville has housing for students with hallways, multiple bedrooms, private bathrooms, living rooms, private kitchens, etc. for just 3 people. Those are their suites. UofL also has rooms in some dorms for 2 people that are about half the size of my closet. Have any of you been to college? There are different housing complexes and dorms at each university; some are much larger than others, and others are barely large enough to fit two beds in. It all depends on the amount of money you are willing to spend, and your own personal preferences.

reply

the dorms I live in are actual apartments - common kitchen/living room, 2 bathrooms, bedrooms are private... and this is in Canada

reply

yeah this was filmed at UOP, and i can tell you that those were the townhouses, while the dorms are smaller, they are still pretty roomy and included a bathroom and kitchen.

You are correct. Most colleges don't have rooms this large. Sometimes double or triple rooms are half the size they show in the movies. There are schools with very large rooms, but they are rare. Remember, directors would not be enamored with standard size rooms since they'd be very difficult to film in. So I think the representation of large rooms in movies might be partially due to this (plus, prestigious campuses tend to look nicer to film anyway and they tend to have larger rooms).

Unfortunately, the size of rooms will increase since there seems to be a demand for this. Subsequently, room prices are going through the roof :(

reply

At a public school, standard dorm rooms would be much smaller.

Much more expensive schools are more likely to have fancier and bigger rooms.

reply

Singles and doubles are tight.

But there are ones with 3 bedrooms connected by 1 big living room and 1 bathroom. Those were nice. Not like this movie though
