Jen and Joey missed opportunities

I think the writers really messed up not doing more with their friendship on the show. They have good scenes together and a natural chemistry. Jen really understood Dawson and Joey very well as individuals and I think she was the friend they both needed. Once Jen wasn't romantically interested in Dawson anymore, the writers should've given them more scenes together. I won't go into detail about the lack of Andie because I think Joey, Jen, and Andie could've been an amazing friend group. I also think Abby should've stayed alive and had a good redemption arc then joins the gang.

Eh, I can't picture high school Joey with a real female friend. She seemed to only be capable of being a friend to guys she was falling in love with (Dawson in Season 1, Pacey in Season 3).

I agree. She was close friends with Jack for a while in season 2 (both before they got together and after he came out), but that closeness was very brief and didn't last very long.

As far as her being friends towards females I wonder if that has something to do with the death of her mother? Now I know that this certainly isn't the case for all women, but with a lot of girls their mother is that very first, very close, platonic bond that they have with another female and it sets the foundation for their female friendships. Joey lost her mother at a young age, and I do wonder if that deeply, psychologically affected her somehow in regards to her inability to have female friendships? Now I'm not saying that Joey should be forced to do something that she doesn't want to do, nor doesn't feels comfortable with at all. She certainly doesn't have to have any female friendships for the rest of her life if it genuinely makes her uncomfortable. But I feel like she should at the very least have 1 female friend (and a quality one too, quality > quantity). Having a close, platonic friendship with someone of your gender is one of life's blessings, and there are certain conversations that Joey could've had with a close female friend that she could've never had with a male one; conversations that (IMHO) needed to happen & would've been extremely healthy & therapeutic for Joey to have because as a girl she needed someone that she could relate too on that level. I do agree that Jen was a missed opportunity for all of that.

And before anyone mentions Audrey, no, just no. I personally don't feel like Audrey was a quality friend, but that's just me.

Yeah that's the really the part that frustrated me is Audrey being considered her first woman friend. Just no, Audrey was way too selfish and just unnecessary in the show. Joey always seemed annoyed by Audrey and Audrey just shoehorned her way into Joey's circle. I do believe the loss of her mother affected her ability to connect with other women on deeper levels. She always seemed annoyed with other women or chose to compete with them. I also think part of my frustration stems from Jen truly loving her group of friends and they rarely returned it at least IMO especially in the series finale when she tells them that they're the best friends she has ever had in life and they don't really respond. Jack and Jen have an amazing bond in the show so that's of course something. I enjoy watching their unconditional love for each other compared to the other childhood BFFs Joey and Dawson and Dawson and Pacey.

I agree - the writers were too focused on the romance aspect - they even ruined the Dawson/Pacey friendship and never truly rebuilt it. I would've loved to see Jen and Joey really become true friends after season 2. The foundation was slowly built, but they never did anything with it. It would've been great to see them grow close throughout the series and always have each others' backs.
