Most egregrious casting

Possibly Ted Jeavons, who is described more than once in the novels as still looking like a musical comedy version of an officer from the first world war even twenty years later. The actor playing him looks ancient.

My schoolboy's mind has been worrying over this "egregrious"* word. Can Commanderjeltz possibly mean Egregious, Adjective: Bad, blatant or ridiculous to an extraordinary degree? Sorry, but English masters in my day were sticklers.

* he can't mean 'gregarious' can he? - that makes little sense.

That was the late Michael Wilson, perhaps better known for comedy roles (such as A FINE ROMANCE opposite his wife, Judi Dench). He was superb - I've just watched the scene of the aftermath of the bombing, and I just can't convey how powerful his shocked silence was in that scene.

I half agree with the OP. I think Jeavons should have been younger - my guess is 45 - but nonetheless MW does a very good job of filling in his emotional side.
