Sadly Not Available In The USA

Oh...the cast sounds staggering. It seems I will have to wait another forever for this UK Mini Series to get published for Region 1.... I can't even get it on VHS! I guess it's the limited market...not to many 50 somethings in suburban America who crave British lit...anyone have any idea if it will happen in my life time?

LOL. "The cast sounds staggering"? I never heard of any of these people except James Villiers, David Yelland and Miranda Richardson. None of them strike me as anything staggering.

I did import the UK version and have my PC's dvd drive set up to play region 2 stuff. Our TV is set up to play region 1 stuff. I just finished watching this last night and I agree with the reviewer who complained about the cast changes. They kept the same Widmerpool, Quiggin, Members, even Sillery, why couldn't they have kept the same Jenkins and Jean Templer?

Actually I was bothered by this right from the beginning because the schoolboy portion was over so quickly and then I had to figure out who all these grownup guys were. Surely they could have used some movie trickery to make Purefoy, et. al, look like schoolboys at the beginning, then normal for the bulk of the show, then age them up a bit for the end?

The only time I thought the ageing was inappropriate was the gorgeous Mark Members who was a contemporary of Nick's, but by the last film he looked about 75, whereas Nick, Quiggin, Jean all looked like late they were in their late '50s at worst (which would have been the case).

Though I did not notice that the wife had changed. She looked the same.

I could nitpick a bit between the book and the movie, but why bother? Movies are never as good as the book.

Yeah, I can look up things on IMDB too, but that still doesn't mean I'd ever heard of them. Though, you were right on John Gielgud, wonder how I missed him.

Ah, the rapier wit of an armless D'Artagnan.

reply

It's like the tree in the forest. If belacane hasn't heard of them, they're not worth mentioning.

reply

Now that's harsh. I didn't say they weren't worth mentioning. I said "the cast sounds staggering" was not my reaction. And now that I've seen these cast members I have been looking for them in other projects.

Forgot to add...the above cast members are in addition to the 3 you were familiar with...also, while the DVD player on my PC would possibly work for region 2 viewing... this particular series would be very costly here in the States and I prefer to watch movies on my LCD TV... to me PC viewing is for airplanes.

Your James Fox list is impressive, Sport, but you have omitted THE SHOOTING PARTY co-starring James Mason (his last film), (movie) that I can heartily recommend.

Learnmedia in Canada (http://www.learmedia.ca/has this available on 2 DVD's,HOWEVER, the second part DVD I received would not play. The first part DVD played fine. I'm about to send it back. BTW, it's fabulous!

I also purchased the UK edition from Amazon UK. If you intend to consume a decent volume of British (and other) video; the best option for you is to purchase a 'region-free' DVD player. There are quite a few very inexpensive options for this. I bought my first one 4 or 5 Christmases ago at a supermarket of all places for less than $50 that was easily modified. Currently, Radio Shack sells a 'Cyberhome' model that can be 'tricked' into playing DVD's from all regions that has sold for as little as $29. Just search the internet and you'll find the 'trick.'

You'll find that in addition to things not-yet-released or never-to-be-released for Region 1 (like scads of BBC/ITV/Granada shows); many that are sold in both markets are much cheaper from the UK. Some Masterpiece Theater items that are distributed here via Acorn Media are three times the price of the UK original DVD's.

reply

I don't think you can even get it on DVD in the UK! It was in HMV on VHS [x2] a few years ago, but I've not seen it since.

As usual, Ginger and I are engaged in our quest to find out what the hell is going on and save humanity from my nemesis, some bastard who's presumably responsible.

reply

Wow! I see this is no longer available at retail from Amazon UK (just used and I guess on eBay). I'm glad I got my copy when I did.

reply

Did you see that the used price is over a hundred pounds because it's listed as rare and deleted?

reply

This is going to be released on DVD in the US in August.

Oh this is good news...looking forward...the Keith who posted here that the cast was nothing wonderful is a Charlton Heston fan, so he wouldn't know a good cast from something that rhymes with the thing on his backside...but I am so happy I think I will reread the books to celebrate!

Can you tell us where you heard/saw that it would be sold in a US version? I'd like to buy a Region 1 copy if I could.

reply

It is still available for rental at amazon.co.uk
Does the american site also do rentals?

It's also here for just under 60 dollars

Acorn Media is releasing it in the US on August 28th, 2007.

reply

The American Amazon doesn't do rentals. We have Netflix, which is the service that Amazon UK is copying. But the point is moot anyways as it won't be on DVD here in America until the end of August.

For the UK bods among you - all four episodes are available free on demand through Channel 4's 4OD. I am off sick today and watching all of it!

reply

I'm not a big fan of Acorn Media. I see (via Amazon) that at least it will be discounted a bit ($45). I've always found that Acorn charges a big premium for the US editions of British TV and movie DVD's. I've bought quite a few Region 2 DVD's before they were available in US (or when they never have been). I think I paid about $25-30 for ADTTMOT when I bought it from Amazon UK, and my copies of LeCarre's Tinker, Tailor, and Smiley's People were also half the price of the Acorn versions. It's also interesting that the Acorn editon will be 4 discs, not the two of the UK edition. I wonder why that is?

reply

If you have Netflix, it (DVDs) is available for rental now.

reply

Thanks for the heads up! I just now moved the 4 disk set to the top of my queue. I didn't know it had been released. Looking forward to a few good nights entertainment.

It's now Nov. 22, 2007 (Happy Thanksgiving by the way) and I've just finished viewing this series on DVD. I checked it out from the library.

Were you ever able to get a copy? If not, try placing a request with your library system. Good luck!

reply

Thanks....yes I rented the series from Netflix. I really loved it. It's worth a rewatch every 5-6 years. It cost too much to buy but it was available for rent finally.
