Like any other cartoon pilots, the animation is not as good as later episodes and the Red Guy's (he is named The Dveil in the pilot) voice sounds campier than usual. It's constroversal because it feature Chicken smoking and refrences to hell (which are a "no-no" to put in a kids show). After watching this, you'll find out why Cartoon Network bans this episode.
"I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you MEDDLING KIDS!!!"
It's not a rumor, I've really seen that Dexter-episode and MAN was it surprising to hear actual regular sound bleeps in a kids show! It didn't exactly say either that swearing was wrong, only that you can get in trouble for it.
Ehh... I know it was a pilot, but with David Feiss behind it, it could've used a lot more polish.
The reference to the Red Guy as the "Devil" sort of makes the joke too direct. Also, while the series never really did lose its borderline-adult sense of humor, seeing Chicken ACTUALLY take a drag on a cigarette loses the subtlety that so characterizes the show.
I did like Cerberus, though. You'd think he'd have 3 vicious heads, but when he comes out, they're just 3 different docile breeds. lol.
It was the one where Dexter changed bodies with the mouse, and his mom was chasing him. Dexter (as a mouse) went into his room while his mom was searching in the hall, and pressed a button that shot a mechanical mouse in the hall. It shows his mom chasing it saying " I'll get you..." and cuts to Dexter wiping sweat from his forehead. As hes wiping the sweat, you can hear is mom say " you bastard you"
References to Hell was controversial? I wouldn't really say so. "Rocko's Modern Life" had several plots that took center in Hell, the best example being "Heff In A Handbasket", where they even mention "666"!
