Who is your favorite character & why?

I am watching this series again on Netflix and I remember that one of the things I always liked so much was the fact that this show may have the best combined cast of characters on any show that I can remember (ok, maybe w the exception of M*A*S*H). I am just wondering who everyone likes the best and why. Not necessarily as a 'favorite person' (let's face is Richard is a FANTASTIC character but personally, I wouldn't want to date him!) but just as a great character. Each time they add someone new you think "no, don't mess up the 'chemistry' of these people" but seriously, can anyone say Nell & Ling didn't make the cast better? I am looking forward to when Robert Downey, Jr. joins the cast (the reason I started watching back then - and I am at the beginning of Season 3 on my 'rewatch') but in general, I just can't see anyone that doesn't add a great 'something' to the show. Just wondered what other people thought.
And, as a side note - I think when a show is written where every character has something positive to add (even if overall they are not the nicest person) and they give you a glimpse into the 'real person' so that there is no real 'villain' it makes for an enjoyable watch. Seriously, did ANYONE not like it when we saw Ling cry by herself when Haley Joel Osment's character died? Personally, I think that is a good way to put a cast together in this day & age (we have enough stress to deal with in real life) & you see it more and more often these days - The Office (US), 30 Rock, etc - no real 'bad guy' and it's fun to watch.

I like Ling and Renee so far. I'm in season 2 now! But I really love them all!

I love Larry!

I just recently started rewatching the show on Netflix, also. It was originally on when I was in late high school into early college, and didn't watch it regularly. I wanted to watch it again for Robert Downey, Jr., so just started from the beginning. He is still my favorite character in the whole show. Just amazing. It was devastating when he left. I'm a few episodes into season 5 now, and I want to cry every time they mention or reference him...
Richard is also a great character. Love his little asides. Bygones. Lol. Ling is great - love how she's the office witch one minute, then secretly hiring a blimp the next minute, to restore Ally's belief in God. Love that duality. One character I just couldn't stand was Mark. He was just boring and annoying, and plain mean & selfish when he was with Elaine. Glad he just "disappeared" of the show later.
The new additions on season 5 weren't horrible, but it just doesn't feel like the same show anymore. Although, James Marsden, I have to admit, was a pretty good addition. :) Him singing "Witchcraft" at the bar was just... yeah... Awesome. :)

(But obviously no comparison to RDJ & Sting at the end of s.4)

Yes, I loved Robert Downey, Jr. (RDJ) in Ally McBeal, too … his Larry character was one of my favorites besides Ally Loved Larry for Ally. Just finished watching the entire series today having watched it when it was on the air back then (I think I stopped watching it back then once Billy died back then). Loved Robert as Larry & so wanted him to be the one for Ally. Their chemistry was on point. He fit Ally well in that he was quirky like her; but, knew how to handle her insecurities, short-comings while working through his own. I can only imagine how beautifully the show would have ended with Ally & Larry married/together after all that Ally went through in relationships. Ally McBeal had a brilliant core group of characters, intriguing guest characters, great writing, court stories, etc. for four seasons … what a shame that the last season was ruined with Larry's write off, core characters disappearing, etc.

I know Robert Downey Jrs. drug-related arrests caused Larry to be written out of the show; but, it could have been done so much better … it was so wrong & abrupt. Larry came back for Ally from Detroit as promised & then dropped her abruptly with a cold note?!!! Unbelievable. I had whiplash with the sudden changes in his character, stumbling & hiccups in the story line before he left Ally. I didn't want his character to be killed off; but, it would have made more sense than the way they dismissed Larry from the show. Although the ending was a major disappointment; it amazes me how well RDJ acted despite the drug issues.

Robert Downey Jr. is an brilliant actor with an infectious personality. I cannot imagine the strength required, pain endured & integrity needed to prevail over drugs as a celebrity & rebuild life … having been introduced to drugs by his father as a child. I am thrilled that he was able beat the drug habit, found love, has the joy of family & is living an amazing life with much success in his career. What a blessing.

I don't think he was in the wrong. Ally dumped ice cream on him and humiliated him in a psychotic temper tantrum when he was having ice cream with his ex-wife and didn't give him a chance to explain. She broke up with him over a phone call. Why SHOULD he stay with that self absorbed bitch? I'd leave too. If I ahd to choose between a childish partner and a childish child that needed me, the kid's gonna win

Ling is my favorite. She's funny and stands out. I also have a crush on Lucy Liu.

Larry for sure. Mostly because he was like walking sex.

Richard Fish, hands down. I think he's hysterical, and he's such a snob, but underneath all his cynicism he does have a real heart. I just wish he'd ended up with Jane, not Liza. Liza had no redeeming qualities.

This won't be a popular opinion but I love Ally. I think Calista's comic timing is severely underrated. As she herself says, she wasn't meant to be the face of feminism. She's just a woman who dreams big and is trying to figure out where she fits in the world. A world where she works besides her first love then watches him die, them finds the love of her life, then loses him and then finds her grown daughter. She makes me laugh, she makes me cry.
I also love Elaine, another character people around this board seem to mostly dislike. I like how opposite Ally she seems to be. But she's funny calms creative and feels as much as anyone.
And, of course, John. How adorable is he?
I have episodes in which I love many of the others, but these would be my three faves.

John, The Biscuit. Runner up is probably Larry, RD jr's character, and then Ally, as incredibly annoying as I found her.
