I didn't much care for the sappy Ned/Sophie BS either....

but this is so many leagues ahead of the overblown Michael Caine HS on ABC that same year. Despite the romance BS I found this an excellent adaptation of the classic Jules Verne tale. Ben Cross is dead on imo with his portrayal of Nemo. Not to take anything away from James Mason but he did play Nemo too overwrought at times while Cross' Nemo is in full control of what he is doing. Paul Gross as Land is just annoying...but of course the true highlight of this nifty feature from Hallmark is the superlative music of John Scott. For film music composition he's the best the brits have. The tracks have been posted (at my request) at CG, the best free movie site on the entire web!
