The Book

I read this book but I didn't really enjoy it, did I miss something or has the story not aged well, Toad was particulary annoying.

So did the book actually have a point to it? I enjoyed this movie but I felt it was missing something, and realized it was a sense of purpose. Toad is meant to be our protagonist I guess, yet he's a completely insufferable loony through the whole film, and he doesn't even learn a lesson at the end! Usually there's some sort of growth at the end of a story like this but there's none here.

Does Toad go right back to his old ways again at the end of the book as well?

reply

The fact that Toad does not changed is a very common thing in movies. One character is not given an inner journey while one or more may. This is done to have a contrast between the past and the now. Toad wishes to go on a journey but does not want to be a lone traveller.

At the end of the original book, "he was indeed an altered Toad", but in the second book, "the Willows In Winter", he returns to his old ways (and indeed his next craze is aeroplanes/airplanes). I think this film was just aimed at the comedy value of Toad. I really enjoyed it actually, although I thought I'd hate it with human actors in the parts! :)

What does actually happen in the second book? I never read the first one (I know, shame on me xP), and I did not even hear of a book called "The Willows In Winter"

Thanks for any explanation!^^
