It was from a book of poetry by Robert E Howard that I found in a second hand shop while we were location scouting the film. I could not believe my eyes when I read it, and knew right then and there that I had to use it in that scene. Vincent was standing beside me when I discovered it - we were both speechless, as if it was meant for us to discover. The script had always said, as Robert reads a poem to his mother...well, we found it. But sorry, I do not remember the name. Ten years takes it's toll on the memory. I'll try to find out from Michael Scott Myers, our screenwriter.
Best, Dan Ireland
(this is the poem in part, and how I know it)
Were we like this forever,
you only have too little to give,
but - here - tonight, we sever;
for life loves life to live.
And how high a man may travel,
the lower can he fall
and the scheme I must unravel
was never meant for all.
Generally, all you have to do with songs or poems is google the lines you know, and the title/author will come up. Nothing is coming up with this. Makes me think it was written by the screen writer, and that it is not a pre-written poem.
