DOLPHINS

Why does the dolphin die? What a jerk who kills a dolphin? Dolphins are sooooo cool there is no reason to kill dolphins. I hate this movie because of it. I hope nobody ever watches this movie, it was horrible. It should be banned in this country because of the unnecessary. WHITE SQUALL IS REALLY BAD!

I don't want to engage in an argument for or against dolphin killing in White Squall, however it does seem to fit with the unbalanced nature of the Jeremy Sisto character. And furthermore, he is removed from the crew for his actions.

But, on a more relevant note, no actual dolphins were hurt during the making of the film - and the dolphin in question was... animatronic.

I'd feel better if this movie isn't a true story; but alas, I can't change the past.

The movie is based on a true story...it is not a true story.

Mitch Hedberg explains what "base on a true" means when Mitch said "I like when they say a movie is inspired by a true story, because that's weird; it means the movie is not a true story, it was just inspired by a true story. Like, hey Mitch, did you hear the story about that lady who drove her children into the river and they all drowned? Yes I did, and it inspired me to write a movie about a gorilla!"

So you feel sorry for the animatronic dolphin, but has nothing to say about the crew that died during the white squall??

You know it is a movie, right?

As a movie this is absolutely one of my favourites!

ok, I tried sooooooooo hard not to comment on this stupid dolphin kick that tombo seems to be on...the movie was anything but pointless, it had more depth then most of the bull that comes out more recently...what are the point of stoner movies? horror movies? they are there for entertainment and that is all. Anyhow, the point of the dolphin scene was to show you how Frank was before and then when you see him later in the movie. He had no respect for life, he was a snotty rich kid who felt he could do anything he wanted WHENEVER he wanted. But throughout the movie he evolves into a caring and mature young man. He realizes the value of all life. SO JUST DEAL WITH IT! IT HAPPENED AND A LESSON WAS LEARNED! MOVE ON!

There is a point when one must realize that movies are simply that. They are the telling of stories both fictional and non-fictional. This story happens to be, for the most part, a true story. The scene with the dolphin, though I do not know if it is fictional or not, is a symbol for the rage and pain inside Franke. The fact that the Skipper must "Finish it." is better for the AUTOMATED (as in ROBOT) dolphin. It is already dying and is in pain....he puts it out of it misery, so that it doesn't die a ... slow ........ and .......... painful .............. death. It is also a lesson for Franke, which shows him the true consequences of what he has done.

I have seen this movie several times both at home and in school. I think it is a wonderful movie. We have watched it several times in my Psychology classes and each time I see more and more into the mental status of each character. You can learn much more about yourself and others, if you could be grown up enough to pay attention and read into the characters emotions and responses to different situations. It's a little better than simply screaming "DOLPHIN KILLER", running into your corner to hide, and only popping your head out to condemn people who actually have a multi dimensional mind.

I read that the young boy who killed the dolphin was not based on fact. It was a storyline added to the drama of WHITE SQUALL. Yes it was terrible that he killed the dolphin, and no, I'm not excusing him, but this character was one of the most compelling of all the boys on the boat, because his father had denied him any outlet for expression. He had a lot of emotional problems and I think the skipper was the only one who addressed them in a fair way. Either his parents spoiled him, ignored him or totally dominated him.

Yeah this is on tv in Australia atm - I just happen to flick through the channels as he was beating the dolphin.

Was it cruel? YES!

hey i was watching it just then too!

not too bad for a midnight movie... funny that they show 'dead poet society' as a midnight movie a lot too. theres a lot of similarities.

anyway. night!

reply

Yes, very cruel to beat that poor dolphin. He should have let him suffer to death instead. Heck, if a spear went through my chest I'd prefer if you left it there and left me to die, that would be be a lot better than morfin or a killing injection.

tombo352001, The director has succeeded if that scene upset you. It was designed to be upsetting. Mission accomplished.

Yes, I think, it's a crappy cliche-movie, too. But as others said before: don't worry about the mechanic dolphin, it was not killed at all. Most likely, not in the real story, either, but that's what I can't say for sure. And talking from the inside, as I spend 6 weeks on the real ship between the shots in the Caribbean and South Africa (high swell scenes). And apart from other stories, the crew told me, the bloody dolphin was kind of dead before, as it didn't really work. Read more on

Maybe the film is as realistic as any other movie, but with others I can't judge it. In this case, the film turned out to be unbearable for all the people involved with the real sailing vessel. Jeff Bridges worked with the real skipper and they did like each other. But the role has nothing to do with the habits of a successful captain, so the contact remainded useless for the actor. To me it seems, Jeff Bridges feels uncomfortable with his artificial film character. It's a very American, moral fairy tale, not more.
We used to follow our skipper around the planet - we would definitly not have done with the film skipper.
