Why did the only characters who 'grew' die?

It's been a while since I saw this film but I remember the only ones who overcame obstacles (the spoilt brat and Ryan Phillipe's character) were the ones who were killed off at the end.

This may have given the ending more of a punch but as a viewer I did feel cheating somewhat by this - it didn't seem right at all.

The movie focused the story on those who were lost. That doesn't mean the others didn't grow in some way. You just didn't see it.

Chuck Gieg, the narrator/POV character, grew quite a bit during the film, as did most of the boys.

The focus on those who eventually die is to make it more dramatic/emotional for you.
