Time Line

I'm confused about how the time line works out.

Cheryl's Mum frequented the clubs to see Watermelon Woman sing in the 1940s. One assumes that Mum was in her 20s for that.

Cheryl says she is 25 in approximately 1995 so b. 1970. That means Cheryl's Mum would have been in her 40s when she had Cheryl.

Her Mum in the film looks to be in her late 50s/early 60s. Which would make her born between 1935 or 45. Then she couldn't have been in the clubs. Unless they allowed tweens in clubs back then?

I've tried to wrap my brain around this and I really cannot. Have I missed something?

Thank you in advance for any theories!

Don't wrap your brain too hard. It's been several years since I saw this, but as I recall, it plays fast and loose with the "facts," such as they are. It didn't even dawn on me until well into the film that this was a mockumentary. I was puzzled as to why I had never heard of the performers and events referenced here.

To answer your question: It's entirely likely that Cheryl's mother would have been admitted into nightclubs as a teenager in the '40s, especially if she looked like an adult. It's also possible that her mother is older than she looks.

But again, it's a bit slap-dash with the timeline.
