This v. Friends with Money

This movie is so spot on. Such an incredibly believable film. There are so many moments that ring true. I felt exactly the opposite about friends with money. There were so many moments that seemed totally contrived...like Jennifer Anniston giving Scott Caan a cut of her cleaning money...yeah right! And the whole gay(?) husband thing. How can Holofcener be so good and SO BAD at the same kind of film?

I totally agree. I loved Walking & Talking, hated Friends with Money. The latter was so utterly unenjoyable.

I agree about Friends with Money. This happens all the time with movies: good proven director and cast but the movie fails.

I recently watched all three of her films, in reverse order, Friends With Money, Lovely and Amazing and then Walking And Talking and I thought they were all amazing. In each one she expanded her reach, taking on more and more characters, but they were all similar, in that nothing much really happens, yet it is transfixing to watch, and ends too soon.

I LOVE Walking & Talking - it is one of my all-time favorites. Friends With Money was so bad that my husband and I almost turned it off in the middle. Perhaps Holofcener is a "one-hit" wonder.

On an interesting side note, it is a good thing that we didn't turn the horrible movie off before the end. Because, at the last dinner party, when Jennifer Aniston's gross boyfriend is making small talk with someone, he mentions that his ten-year-old daughter's name is Ivy. I was pregnant when we watched this, and my husband and I couldn't agree on a name. When we heard that completely throw-away line in this TERRIBLE movie, we looked at each other and just knew that we had found the right name. I am happy to report that Ivy is going to be a year in July. At least something good came out of this stupid movie!

I have always loved the name Ivy. Seeing as how we don't know eachother and I am not pregnant at this time, I GUESS I give you permission to use it. ;)

I'm so glad you're going to approve the usage. My daughter is going to be one in a couple of months - the name change might be a bit confusing for her!

I think the only reason you like the name Ivy is because Bob Ivy plays Bubba Ho-Tep...'fess up!

FWM is a fantastic film. I know a lot of people were put off by the “non-ending”, but that was the whole point. Nicole NEVER spells everything out for you, she has faith in the viewers imagination and intelligence.
