Whats with all the gay jokes?

Its quite annoying after a while. I know back then Gay meant happy but still, its just stupid

"It's not the Scar that you make , It's the Memory you leave with it"

reply

not everything has to be funny to everyone... i have an idea... go buy the vhs version, open it up, cut out the scenes, tape them back together, be happy.

I loved the gay jokes...The whole movie was a parody of itself.

lol nice...I love it! Just goes to show that you can't please everyone...someone will always blow things out or proportion and get themselves all worked up and offended.

"Quite annoying"? The whole movie is quite annoying if you look at it! The fact is is that the movies are placed in the 90's and then you have these people who are still living in the 70s'!! Come on now, I'm sorry it's a sore subject for you but you kind of have to look at the movie as a whole. Again, the entire movie is "annoying"...personally I love it though.

the gay jokes are a reference to the fact that gay meant happy back then, but are also a reference to the fact the the original actor (i cant remember his name)who played mr.brady was gay, and unfortunatly died of AIDS related illness.

um i highly doubt they kept using the word "gay" to refer to the original father. esp since he died, i dont think they would refer to that.
nice try though

Back WHEN? Trust me, in the 90s, gay meant homosexual and in the 70s, gay meant homosexual.

reply

maybe you found it stupid, but there is a difference between finding something stupid and finding something insulting. you need to choice between the two.

if you are slying trying to imply that it was homophobic then you seriously need to lighten up.

again, i can accept someone not liking a movie or whatever. but to say it was 'unnecessary' like it was cruel or something is really absurd.

i thought it was light hearted and fun and quite honestly very mature as far as gay humor is concerned. you could make the same joke about a hetrosexual.

for instance, let's say there is a movie where the main characters are a gay couple, and one of them runs away to some exotic place after a fight.. and the man at the car rental asks, are you straight (as in, are you sober?) and the gay person answers, "no. but right now i kind of wish i was" would that be considered offensive?

That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Something can be both stupid and insulting and there is no need to choose between the two.

There IS a difference between 'stupid' and 'insulting.'

...and I wasn't talking about in the literal sense. I was talking about the JOKE. the comedy material in the script. don't twist my words into something else.

something stupid could be something(or someone) that shows a lack of intelligence or basic skills; might appear goofy, immature.

Insulting is something that is degrading and hurtful.

obviously a PERSON who is stupid could also insult someone...but that's CLEARLY not what I'm talking about.

I was referring (solely) to the comment made on the joke; when someone said it was stupid but then gave a description that implied it was degrading. if you feel that it was homophobic, then you should say you found it homophobic and leave out the vaguity!

The early 70s (when the Brady Bunch originally aired) is about the time when the meaning of the word shifted from "happy" to "homosexual". If you go back to the start of the decade, it still meant "happy". For example, the first episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show describes the demonstrably straight Mary Richards' downstairs neighbor, Phyllis as "young and gay." But by 1976, the phrase "gay bar" was now understood by the general public as we know it today. (The 1976 movie Murder by Death (1976) has a "scandalous revelation" where Tess Skeffington mentions that "Twain picked up Sam in a gay bar".)

That certainly is possible. I was too young then and wouldn't remember that.

Fascinating! And I LOVE the way you use the usage of "gay" in pop culture to prove your point. I have to accept what you say as true since I can think of nothing to counter it (and have no reason to). I will tell you in 1976, I KNEW what homosexual was, even though I don't think I had a word for it. I just knew it was the thing that grandma's friends were. I had an interesting childhood. Ever see Auntie Mame? That was my grandmother -- just like that.
