Greg kissing Marcia

And another thing, why would Greg and Marcia fall in love? I mean their brother and sister. And if Greg is gonna date Marcia after he pulls her chair out for her he should sweep her off her feet and carry off in his arms. And why would they kiss?

reply

You do understand that Greg and Marcia are NOT brother and sister? The boys had a different mother and the girls had a different father. Mike and Carol married after they lost/divorced their respective others. So Greg and Marcia are only step brother and sister. No blood between them. I thought the whole idea was very funny and should have been played with on the orginal series.

Joey, the answer is simple. The series was made about 30 years ago when prevailing standards were not as permissive as today, so they could not make a joke out of "step-brother and -sister being attracted to each other," even though privately people might. Today things are much more loose, so that they can do publicly what people once imagined privately, and it comes across funny and acceptable to do so.

reply

Yeah, I thought the whole thing was weird but funny. It sort of worked even though it was strange to see, especially when you think of the show it came from.

thanks cooper I thought I was the only one that got that inside joke. Thats what I was about to post is it's an inside joke because barry williams and maureen mccormack were attracted to each other. Knowing that makes the fact they made Greg and Marcia have the hots for each other in the sequel even more amusing. It was amusing to hear Barry talking about it in an interview...about him letting himself in Maureen's dressing room...

Despite the fact that they're not related, they'd been living together long enuff to think of each other as brother and sister so that should have negated most of those feelings. They weren't even old enuff to be thinking about dating when the show started so the sibling bond should have been in effect along time ago. Of course, Marcia did look hot, didn't she? Those short skirts didn't help. But in the end, it was just a hilarious plotline in the movie and it worked. Im sure alot of people were thinking about it even back then.

Sorry you didn't like it.
But most of us did.

Get a sense of humor. It was a joke. You know, like, haha, funny?

i know that they were not blood related, but it was a little gross because of the way they were raised together, as if they really were brother and sister. not too offensive tho, just a bit strange.

Are you crazy??. Incest is way too taboo a subject now much less back then in the late 60's. Just the concept of something like that going on in the same family would never have made it out of the board room. The show would have gotten so many complaints it would have been cancelled on the spot. That would have been an example of the 60's sexual revolution going too far. The Brady's had been introduced to America as a family when all the kids were still in grade school and the fact that they weren't related was never an issue except for the corny theme song. No one would have cared that they weren't related by blood. The family code would override any arguement.

I thought the Greg/Marcia storyline was the best thing about this sequel. Yeah Barry and Maureen definitely made out while making the series so it's only fitting the spoof would go into that. I thought it was making fun of how all the actors had the crushes on each other or were dating each other during the original series.

reply

Beyond the actual facts of the two actors, I grew up watching this show in the 70s, and all we guys could talk about was how if Marcia were our "sister" (note the quotes), we'd be all over that.

Of course, we didn't say it in quite that way. It was the 70s, after all.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

"It was disgusting".

Maybe it's because I am a liberal, but, I didn't think it "disgusting". Marcia and Greg are not consanguineous relatives. Though their relationship isn't socially correct, I wouldn't say it is 'evil' or 'disgusting' (Greg didn't rape Marcia or anything like that) and nothing therapy cannot fix!

The sexual attraction between Greg and Marcia is a wink to those of us who watched the show on the regular as well as those of us who read Barry Williams' book GROWING UP BRADY. Williams and Maureen McCormick fought their teenage lust for each other throughout the run of the TV show and if you look closely at the reruns, sometimes you can see it on the screen and I thought it was very smart of TPTB of this film to address that.

It reminds me of Clueless, where Cher and Josh were step-brother and step-sister and became a couple in the movie. But I don't ever remember anyone talking about it or making a big deal when it came out.

I saw a movie about 17 years ago that actually made a serious issue of this. I think it was called Sin of Innocence. I remember Dermott Mulrony (sp?) and Bill Bixby in two of the starring roles. Anyway, the parents married without considering the fact that they both had two really attractive teen children around the same age. They fell in love with each other, and the fall out was heartbreaking. I only saw this movie once, but it really got at me when I first saw it.

Watching Greg nad Marcia hook up in this sequel nearly killed my attempts to watch the original series. In the original series, Greg and Marcia never appeared to want each other. The relationship was very brotherly and sisterly. No sexual tension. Same thing in the Brady Bunch movie. Greg never once checked out Marcia. But in the sequel they made a big leap into having Greg and Marcia fall for each other. That was a little too much to take.

reply

In my opinion I thought the whole romance in the movie was quite hilarious but if they actually had gotten married it would be sorta awkward because even though they aren't related by blood its like what happens when the kids come along....the father would be like their dad and in an odd way their uncle as well...it would just be an uncomfortable situation
Btw.....in Clueless, Cher and Josh's relationship was ok because her father and his mother were once married but at the time of Cher and Josh's hook up, their parents had already divorced so they weren't related at all at that point

reply

The Greg-Marcia romance was the funniest part of the film.

Sure, it was creepy, a little bit on the too-far side but it does make for hilarity.

Personally, I think they put it in for everybody who ever thought "What if...."

I recently watched a re-run of the Brady Bunch and it was an episode where Marcia and Greg are older. They are competing with eachother on who can drive the best. Now, I knew that they used to go out during the series, but while watching the episode, its soooo obvious they had something going on. The chemistry is there. In the film, i thought the chemistry between Marcia and Greg was really there, it makes the film funny, and watchable. For some reason you wanted them to get together, eventhough you know they won't, because they don't want to ruin the whole image of the show. But i thought it was funny because it was really a spoof of how these family shows in the 60's had these young actors that were attracted to eachother and weren't professional and whole-some as they were potrayed on TV. It's become this fab in the 60's and 70's shows that their was a hookup. Even in the Partridge Family, David Cassidy slept with his co-star.
