Anyone got DVD release info?

The new double-disc "Commitments" release is Great! The recent release of "The Snapper", while pretty darn poor from a technical quality standpoint, was welcomed and much appreciated! But how 'bout "The Van"?

I know the VHS is still available if you dig around but GOLLY!-- have you seen the asking-price? OUCH! And if I lived in Europe, I know I could get the DVD there, but what about us Americans?

Any News would be Good News!

Thanks, you'all!

Well I'm in England, and I can't find The Van on DVD... :(

The only place that The Van was formatted for DVD is Germany. Most DVD players on the market today will play PAL formats, which this one would be. The only thing you would have to worry about is if the audio was in German or English. Go to www.amazon.de and the movie in Germany is called "Fisch and Chips."

I have an original on VHS and am thinking about selling it.

All 3 are available on dvd in english with no permanant subtitles, I paid £25 for the lot and are excellent copies.

It's only been officially released on DVD within the past couple of months. I bought it in my local Tesco here in Ireland yesterday and have just finished watching it.

For a DVD release, it's pretty poor in terms of contents. There's no extras at all, unfortunately, apart from the theatrical trailer. Significantly, I noticed that the scene where Larry and Bimbo do the "catering" job for Wally was cut. I think there may have also been a few other small cuts too but I'd have to re-watch my old VHS copy that I recorded off the TV when the BBC first showed the film (God, it's crazy to think it's almost 10 years ago now! lol) to compare the two versions and work out which other bits were cut from the DVD release.

In terms of the DVD transfer, it's pretty good for a film that's over 10 years old now and I didn't notice any real picture degredation or grainy bits so that's ok. However, in terms of the audio, I did notice that if you listen closely (I listened through earphones when I was watching it earlier) it sounded like many lines and pieces of the audio have had to be re-dubbed or re-recorded in some way for the DVD release so I guess the audio hasn't lasted the test of time as well as the picture. The audio re-dubs were quite noticable in places and did take away from it a little bit for me, I must say. Though, then again, perhaps if I hadn't been listening through earphones but through regular speakers I wouldn't have noticed this aspect as much.

Still, though, I have loved this film for years. The World Cup scenes are fantastic and bring back lots of happy memories and remind me so much of the whole World Cup fever that swept the nation back in 1990. I have watched my VHS TV recording of this film many times over the years to the point where the tape must be nearly worn out at this point so it's good to finally have a DVD copy of it which I'll hopefully be able to enjoy now for many years to come. It's just a shame there weren't more extras to enjoy on the disc. Perhaps if there's another release in the future this might be corrected.

I have always loved this movie and bought the dvd about a year ago but have always been pissed off about the cuts. my vhs copy had all the missing scenes. such as the catering job for Wally (which renders the joke when they see him in the car going down on some girl redundant) also the scene where larry explains the only way to connect with women is through money

Larry: do you know how to connect with women like these? money. give them a choice between looks and money, nine times out of ten, they'd go for the money. they'd wet themselves over an ugly fu*ker with a wallet. yer wan jackie onassis, you cant tell me she married bleedin aristotle, because she loved him

Bimbo: she might've

Larry: not at all. and princess deeanna the same. she only married fu*kin big ears for the same reason.
