--Spoiler ahead--

But it wasn't so sad. She is going to be "reincarnated" in this lifetime as she said she would like to be. At the airport, Millie says to her daughter: "I'm so excited". I think it's safe to assume that good things are on her way.

Personally, I don't think she is going to go to San Francisco. She didn't want to start over that period of her life (taking care of babies). My bet is that she goes, eventually, to Miami. When she and Big Tommy are having dinner, she mentions to him the possibility of her moving to Miami. Just look at the way his eyes beam with the idea. I think it's a little hint for us.

In any case, Millie has gained more perspective during the movie, and has opened the door to romantic love once again. So I see it as a happy beginning.

actually, at the end of the film, when her daughter drops her at the airport and Gena is getting out of the car, if you look very carefully, it looks like she has her little blue passport tucked into the front pocket of her purse. it also looked like a white paper of some sort is tucked into that....possibly her airplane ticket. so, my presumption is that she was going to take a trip abroad (possibly Europe), see the world a bit, find herself again and then, from THERE, see what she wanted to do with her life.

also, i believe that she already knew that she definitely did NOT plan to move to San Francisco, nor Miami. i think it was all about uncharted territory for her, and fresh beginnings...infinite possibilities. wherever she chose to settle, it sadly would not involve Gerard D. however. but she was embarking on a whole new existence and the thrill of that was indeed invigorating. :-)

That's very observant of you, joeyperceptible! I was guessing that she was going someplace entirely different, not San Francisco or Miami, and that she'd have a blast and wind up on her feet wherever she went. She certainly deserved whatever riches awaited her.

And the ending was anything but sad. I found it very hopeful.

I find the ending very positive. Mildred finally had the courage to live her own life rather than existing as a small part of the lives of the people around her, who often took her for granted. I think that it's open ended whether she continues her relationship with Tommy but I certainly felt that his interest in her, gave her confidence to realise that she was entitled to a life of her own.

What a great movie.

That's very true. At the start of the film, Mildred was a bit of a homebody without much direction, but her relationship with Tommy and her other experiences opened a world of possibilities for her -- enabling her to, well, unhook the stars. Regardless of whether she wound up with Tommy or alone this film had a happy, ending because Mildred discovered the world beyond her home and her family. She'll do just fine, whether she's in a couple or alone.

I agree w/ all you guys.

I totally relate to this movie, cuz I'm too at a crossroads. I don't connect w/ my old friends anymore. Nothing bad--people just change. But I know I am worthy and capable of new friends, and will try to boldly forge my own direction now. Just like Mildred.

Well, good luck to you wherever your life leads. And if it doesn't lead where you want it to, you always have great movies like this to ease the sinking feeling of disappointment.
