DVD

I can't find it anywhere on DVD. I saw it years ago, and this movie still haunts my mind. I really want to see it again.

... but is this an official version? Why the ultra-sublte release?

It's supposed to say subtle, hehe, not the best choice of word in any case. The point is, it's hard to come by, and it looked like it was only sold second hand (kind of odd). I'm just wondering why I haven't seen it anywhere else. Was it produced in extremely limited numbers? I just think it's wierd. Schlöndorff is an acclamed director, and Der Unhold has gotten good reviews as far as I know (and Kino normally releases "small" films anyways, shouldn't be a problem with them).

I bought a DVD of "The Ogre" from Kino; they should have it in stock as I've recommended it to quite a few friends and they all were able to buy it.

I thought the filming was quite beautiful especially the ride to Herman Goring's
lodge, and the scenes in what I suppose is Karinhall. I was quite impressed with the Director's efforts to recreate scenes from many famous WW2 era photographs, especially the ReichMarshall's lodge and it's trappings, "Booby" the lion, the collection of stag trophies, layout of all the game for photos.
etc.

The hunting scenes looked as though they were from an actual cull hunt, and were very brutal. I don't think they could put that little disclaimer in the credits saying "no animals were harmed in the course of making this film"

A friend worked on this movie and he said they coordinated the hunting scenes with the Polish forestry department and filmed their cull hunt - the film crew scheduled to fit the hunt rather than the other way around - but that no additional animals were killed or injured on account of making the film.

Old post, obtaining it is no longer a problem. You can rent it from Netflix, and you can either buy a DVD or stream it from amazon.com.
