Phillip Seymour Hoffman's Buffoonery !!

No one else found this annoying? I mean, we now know him as a brilliant actor, but in this, yuck !! Of course, it seems like every team of movie scientists back in the 90's had at least one of these "characters".

I wonder if he was using heroin during the filming of this. He was acting out of control the entire film.

reply

Kind of an eerie post... considering what happened today!

reply

Hoffman really sucked in his part. I think on a movie set the heroin flows a lot

and pork bellies like him get a snootfull.

reply

That is a stupid mean thing to say about a man who was a great actor and died way too early. You should be ashamed of yourself.

reply

Hmmm.... it would had been terrible if Hoffman wouldn't had been on heroine for real. He was a known heroine addict. So, while I see what you mean, it was so far fetched theory. I don't say that this is true or not, I don't know.

reply

Heroin doesn't make you run around like a crazy person. Makes you chill and relaxed nodding out

reply

Probably just following the script

The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it

reply

I love this guy!

reply

OMG... He's Dead !!! And just one day after I chose to criticize him. such a waste of a great talent.

reply

Actors grow. They get better. The fact that PSH wasn't very good in this movie only means his growth as an actor in subsequent films is all the more impressive.

And to be fair, the script was pretty shallow character-wise anyway, and the director was a former D.P. who never showed much interest in working with actors.

reply

Actually I thought he provided some pretty good comedy to a film that needed some humor to keep it afloat. Yeah it wasn't the best film ever made, but some people got a little better understanding on how destructive tornadoes can be.

But I think Philip's best acting went way beyond this one film, so I hope other people see his best work. And yes, people should talk about drug abuse and the problems it creates.

reply

I remember liking his character after seeing this film many years ago.

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman 1967-2014... a tremendously great and talented actor.

Sad that because he died as he did now people are piling on the insults - you know who your friends are at times like that - even after death...

No, he played Dusty correctly - I worked in a NOAA field project one summer (seeding thunderstorms, not chasing them - lol), and we had our share of Dustys - they were very bright but had their quirky moments.

You could tell Dusty was true to himself when he became very serious in the scene when Bill's girl friend became hysterical (where Dusty is holding the umbrella over her while trying to calm her down), so Dusty had his quirky side, but he knew better when the moment called to be serious...

May he rest in God's peace...

reply

I'll just say that this was the first movie I saw with him. He was a bit crazy and out of control, but makes you appreciate how good of an actor he was in his other films! RIP PSH

I thought he was fantastically goofy in this. He was playing a buffoon, so why not ham it up? One of the things I remember most about this film, is when he runs up to the car and says "I need foood" while making the "ooo"s with his hands. How quirky was that?

reply

Foooooood!!!! haha, dusty was extreme!!

reply

I loved his performance. Sure, the character was the stock, cliche kooky nerd on the team but PSH’s talent elevated Dusty to be both funny and memorable. “Fooooooood, sustenance” lol, great stuff. The kind of quirky details truly talented actors add to any performance, even minor supporting roles.

reply

What? He was fine lol. I mean...in such an outlandish movie as this...it's not calling for grand subtlety or anything. And some people are obnoxious in real life

reply

I thought he was great in this. Out of all the storm chasers Dusty was easily my favorite.

reply

PSH seems like he is mildly retarded in this movie. In real life this guy wouldn't last a day in a real group of anyone. People would be sick of him.

reply

I knew a guy EXACTLY like Dusty in high school. It's been 15 years since graduating and the guy is still the same and a lot of fun!

reply

"were gone"

reply

Mildly retarded my a$$! He's hysterical, no doubt very immature, but boy did he diffuse the tension. He made everyone hungry to keep working and succeed in testing. Storm chasing is not for the faint of heart, so someone has to lighten the load.

reply

PSH's character (Dusty) was probably the most hilarious one in this film; I dare say it adds a great deal of character to Jo's team, and I think the movie would be less fun without him.

reply

I guess this is another one of those things Tommy Lee Jones cannot sanction.

reply

i consider him the BEST part of TWISTER.
he clearly played the part well of being an obsessive adrenaline junkie for twisters! kinda like a car enthusiast.

reply

Exactly. Like a teenager on a sugar high.

Bill: Hey Dusty, why don't you explain to Melissa why you are the way you are?
Dusty laughs and then jerkily stomps his feet in place. That was funny as hell. Sure, could be said that PSH could have been high on something for that scene, but personally I know if I am really upbeat and in the moment about something releasing my energy like that is a moment's notice.
