why did they say 'tab'

don't get the connection since I am not a Brit for why the Oxford rowers would use the word/expression "tab" when they were acting silly about Cambridge...
they threw food at the rivals' photos and cried TAB--
what is with that???

It's an abbreviation of the Latin name of Cambridge, something like CanTABrigia. Oxon would be the similar abbreviation for Oxford.
